Spain’s head coach, Luis de la Fuente, expressed his admiration for Mikel Merino following the midfielder’s decisive goal. Merino’s late strike off the bench clinched a 1-0 victory over Portugal, propelling La Roja into the quarter-finals of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
In the 91st minute in Dallas, Merino found the net after an assist from fellow substitute Ferran Torres, concluding a tense Round of 16 match and sending Cristiano Ronaldo’s Portugal home.
Reflecting on the triumph, De la Fuente highlighted the impact of Spain’s substitutes, noting that their contributions were pivotal in a match he likened to a final.
“It truly was a spectacular match, almost like a final before the final. As anticipated, we faced challenges right up until the last moments,” De la Fuente remarked.
“We delivered a well-rounded performance, but the key players are those who step off the bench. I advised Merino to stick to his usual play style, aiding both midfield and attack. Our aim was to ensure a strong pace leading up to potential extra time. The players’ contributions have been exceptional.”
Coach backs Yamal and Rodri
The Spain manager reserved special praise for Merino, revealing the long-standing relationship he has built with the Arsenal midfielder through the national team’s youth ranks.
“I’m very happy for him. I have a great affection for all the players, but with Mikel Merino there’s something special because we’ve known each other for a long time.”
“If necessary, I’d go to pick him up at his house. He’s world-class. Mikel never disappoints; he’s a safe bet.”
De la Fuente also defended teenage winger Lamine Yamal, insisting the Barcelona youngster produced one of his finest performances despite facing tough opposition.
“I think he played one of his best games; it’s a very important day for his growth.”
“He instilled fear. It’s one of the best games in Lamine’s history… and there’s more to come.”
The coach also highlighted the influence of midfielder Rodri.
“Rodri is the guiding light of this team. A player with an exceptional presence. He provides balance. He’s the best player in the world in his position.”
Spain will now face Belgium in the World Cup quarter-finals after the Red Devils defeated the United States 4-1.
Looking ahead, De la Fuente insisted his side remain focused regardless of the opponent.
“We don’t care who we face. We’re happy to be in the quarter-finals and we’re going to give it our all until the end. Our opponents will have to beat us.”
