A Spanish Adaptation of 'Ghosts' Is Coming; How Many Others Are There?

Back in 2019, viewers across the United Kingdom had the pleasure of being introduced to Ghosts, a television series that quickly captured their imaginations. The story revolves around a young couple who unexpectedly inherit an old estate. A twist of fate, marked by a near-death experience, reveals that one of them possesses the ability to see and communicate with the spirits lingering within the property. As they begin to adjust to their new lives, they find themselves forging alliances with these spectral inhabitants. This unique blend of comedy and supernatural intrigue resonated with audiences, making the show an immediate sensation. Although the original BBC One series has concluded, the concept has sparked international interest, leading to various adaptations around the globe. A Spanish version is currently in development, adding to the growing Ghosts phenomenon.

‘Ghosts’ premiered in the United States in 2021

The United States was quick to recognize the potential of such a captivating premise, launching its own adaptation soon after the U.K. original. While adhering to the core storyline, the American rendition introduced spirits with a culturally significant twist, featuring characters like a Lenape spirit, a free-spirited hippie, and a singer hailing from the roaring 1920s. This clever infusion of diverse characters helped the series resonate with American audiences.

Debuting in 2021, the U.S. version quickly became a staple for CBS, and its popularity shows no signs of waning as it heads into its fifth season. Fans are eagerly anticipating a sixth season, although CBS has yet to confirm plans beyond the 2026 schedule, leaving its long-term future open to speculation.

For a time, the American adaptation stood alone, but the Ghosts franchise has since expanded. In 2025, three new versions joined the lineup. The French adaptation, Les Fantômes, debuted with fresh characters tailored to French culture, including a long-dead philosopher, a rave-loving DJ, and a silent film actress, presenting a distinctly French twist on the series.

A French, Greek, and German versions of the show launched earlier this year

Germany also embraced the Ghosts concept, introducing audiences to a monk, a punk, and a police officer among its eclectic cast of spirits. Meanwhile, the Greek adaptation, set in a wealthy suburb of Athens, features nine spirits, each adding to the rich tapestry of the series. These adaptations continue to breathe new life into the Ghosts franchise, each finding its unique voice while staying true to the heart of the original concept.

The German adaptation features a cast of characters including a monk, a punk, and an officer. The Greek adaptation also premiered in 2025. It is set in an affluent suburb in the Athens agglomeration. Nine spirits have been revealed thus far.

Most recently, an Australian take on Ghosts premiered this month. Australia is the latest country to add its own version of the popular series to its lineup, bringing the total number of adaptations to six. The series has thus far received rave reviews from Australian viewers. Viewers from outside the country seeking adaptations of the U.K. original series love it, too.

A Spanish version of the show is in the works, too

While production studios around the world have been hard at work creating Ghosts adaptations, the work isn’t done yet. A seventh version of the series is in the works for Spanish audiences. Back in 2024, Deadline confirmed that BBC Studios was working on multiple adaptations, including a Spanish-language version of the beloved show with all-new spirits.

Still, there are no additional details on when viewers can expect the series or what type of spirits they’ll run into in it. The fact that four out of six adaptations premiered in the last several months suggests that interest in more is there. Whether a Spanish version will wait to premiere until some of the novelty of the existing shows settles down is anyone’s guess.
