Speed Darlington Urges President Tinubu to Prioritize Police Reform Over Economic Growth

Controversial Nigerian entertainer, Speed Darlington, has appealed to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to focus on reforming the Nigeria Police Force, stressing that leadership should not be measured only by economic progress.

In a video released on Saturday, August 23, the singer argued that while boosting the nation’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) is important, protecting citizens’ rights and freedoms is even more critical.

According to him, many Nigerians suffer because of unchecked police misconduct.

He remarked that “the police in Nigeria often see human rights violations as part of their duty,” and urged the President to instruct the Inspector-General of Police to change this culture.

His Personal Ordeal With Law Enforcement

The artiste recalled his own unpleasant encounter with the police, alleging that he was unlawfully detained for two months despite a court ruling ordering his release.

He explained that Nigerian law permits investigators to hold suspects for a maximum of 28 days, but in his case, the police exceeded that limit without justification.

“I remained in custody an extra month simply because they could. If money changes hands, they will go as far as oppressing your enemies. I experienced this firsthand,” he said.

Call for Change

Speed Darlington maintained that genuine reform of the police is necessary for Nigeria to progress, adding that economic policies alone cannot guarantee justice or security for ordinary citizens.
