Meanwhile, a voice over reminds viewers: ‘The Great Barrier Reef…the most beautiful coral reef in the world.

‘But it is facing more challenges than it has ever faced right now.’

This is followed by images of vast pockets of the reef, devastated by ‘bleaching’, which is created by environmental stress, including change of temperature.

The preview also includes includes breathtaking footage of the ‘super villain’ that threatens the GBR, the Crown-of-thorns starfish, which can wipe very large areas of  the reef in a short period of time.

Reefshot focuses on Riley and a large team of individuals known as the Citizens of the Great Barrier Reef who set out to survey 500 reefs that are part of the GBR.

The group has so far captured 75,000 images – used to estimate the ‘health’ of the reef – since 2020.

And this documentation is used to fast track conservation of the  GBR, using technology and new methods.

‘The twin crises of climate change and nature loss threatens the reef’s health, and ultimately its survival, Riley said in a statement.

‘Revealed: Reefshot is all about the power of the citizen, whether on the Reef or on the other side of the world, being able to help achieve the scale necessary to address the vast conversation challenges ahead of us.
