For those of us who have recently gone through a breakup, what’s to come may seem daunting. Luckily, one TikTok user has comprehensively outlined the steps that’ll follow in your new single era.
Samantha Wong (@samcity_), a Vancouver-based content creator, recently shared what she’s dubbed the “Stages of Singleness” for people navigating singlehood.
“It appears that a lot of people are going through breakups right now,” she says. “So I have created a graph to prepare you, coming from a 26-year-old that went through a breakup six months ago. This is my personal experience, but also, it is factual.”
“Our economy is in a recession. You might as well be, too.”
The first step, Samantha notes, is the “deep, deep depression” that immediately follows the breakup.
“It’s giving ‘crying yourself to sleep at night.’ It’s giving ‘malnourished,’” she says. “Don’t feel bad if you’re in this state. Our economy is in a recession. You might as well be, too.”
After a deep depression, you re-emerge into society.
“…this is where you start feeling hotter than you ever felt before.”
“One day, you wake up, and the colors are a little bit brighter. You have this urge to go outside,” she says. “You start romanticizing life again, but there are some up-and-downs until you get to your villain era.”
This, according to Samantha, is when you make drastic changes to your self-appearance, and “this is where you start feeling hotter than you ever felt before.”
“The confidence that is instilled in you is astronomical,” she says. “You’re going out with friends, getting drunk, tearing it up on the dance floor, bullying any man that comes up to you to say, ‘Hey.’”
“You’re falling in love with random people that are walking on the street, and you think that they’re falling in love with you back.”
The villain era soon gives way to your “flirty and thriving era,” during which you are driven by an overwhelming sense of boldness.
“You feel like you could go up to a cute guy and ask for their number,” she says. “You’re falling in love with random people that are walking on the street, and you think that they’re falling in love with you back.”

The turning point, however, is when “your dumb little brain” convinces you to redownload the apps and “fraternize” with potential suitors.
“Sure, maybe you go on a date or two that’s not the worst,” she says. “Maybe you exchange some banter with a couple of people on the internet. But no matter what, you end up down here with a gender-wide ick. And once you have that, there’s no going back.”
Samantha adds, “You declare that you are going to be single for the rest of your life… with conviction.”

In under a week of posting, Samantha’s video has more than 2.4 million views and 334,300 likes. TikTokers are impressed with just how accurate her graph is.
“Damn this was accurate. I’ve finished this whole flow,” someone wrote.
“I just hit the flirting thriving stage & plan on staying here ALLLLLLL summer 23′,” another said.
“i vow to remain single for the rest of my life,” one user claimed.
As this graph demonstrates, being single can be emotionally taxing. Take it from Samantha: It may be better to “stay in your villain era” for as long as possible.
