As Thanksgiving draws near, families can look forward to gathering around Disney+ for the latest Beatles offering, a chance for all generations to enjoy a beloved piece of music history. This year, the streaming service brings a meticulously restored version of The Beatles Anthology, the iconic eight-part documentary series that first captivated audiences in 1995 as a trio of feature-length specials on ABC.
Crafted by directors Bob Smeaton and Geoff Wonfor, the original series is a treasure trove of archival footage and audio, sourced from the vast collection of the Beatles’ close associate and manager, Neil Aspinall. It features in-depth interviews with the surviving members at the time—Paul McCartney, George Harrison, and Ringo Starr—offering what was meant to be the definitive documentary on the legendary band. Accompanying the series was a four-volume set of double albums, rich with rare interviews and alternate versions of the Beatles’ classic tracks.
Thanks to the expert restoration work by Peter Jackson’s Park Road Post studio in Wellington, New Zealand, this cherished documentary is now available in high definition. The updated release includes a special ninth episode, capturing McCartney, Harrison, and Starr in the ’90s as they collaborate on new songs like “Free As Bird,” “Real Love,” and “Now and Then.” Although some of this footage was previously available in the DVD’s special features, the new release promises a fresh perspective.
