Yellowstone fans who tuned in with anticipation for the spin-off Marshals on March 1 were met with an unexpected twist: the death of another significant character!
The final episode of Yellowstone aired in December 2024, leaving characters like Beth Dutton (Kelly Reilly), Rip Wheeler (Cole Hauser), Kayce Dutton (Luke Grimes), his wife Monica (Kelsey Asbille), their son Tate (Brecken Merrill), and several others unscathed by Taylor Sheridan’s dramatic storytelling. However, the series was no stranger to tragedy, featuring numerous key character losses in its concluding season.
The debut of Marshals not only saw Luke Grimes return to his role from Yellowstone as he joined the ranks of U.S. Marshals, but it also introduced viewers to another heart-wrenching and unexpected character exit.

Before the premiere of Marshals, the announcement of Grimes’ co-stars, including Brecken Merrill, Logan Marshall-Green, Arielle Kebbel, Ash Santos, Tatanka Means, Mo Brings Plenty, and Gil Birmingham, caused a stir among fans. Noticeably absent from the cast list and synopsis was Kelsey Asbille’s name, sparking concern as to why Monica’s character was not mentioned. The release of a tense Marshals trailer from CBS, which also omitted Monica, amplified fears about her fate in the new series—fears that were not unfounded.
In a show-altering shocker, Marshals Episode 1 reveals that Monica is dead and Kayce, Tate, and Monica’s Broken Rock Reservation family are still grieving. So how did Monica Dutton die? Why did Marshals kill Monica? And why did Kelsey Asbille leave the Yellowstone universe? Here’s what we know, including comments from showrunner Spencer Hudnut and Grimes.
Why Did Marshals Kill Monica Dutton? How Marshals Wrote Monica Off The Yellowstone Spin-Off
Before Yellowstone concluded, Kayce sold the family land to Rainwater for $1.25 an acre, or 1.1 mil in total, to return the Yellowstone and Paradise Valley to the Broken Rock People. Kayce, Monica, and Tate officially moved to East Camp and were finally settled following the Dutton drama and John’s (Kevin Costner) tragic, unexpected death. So naturally, fans thought Marshals would pick up with Kayce and his fam where we left them — in a good, loving place!
Instead, Marshals opened with Kayce having a nightmare. In it, he was dodging explosives with an armed team when he found a cell phone ringing in the woods. He answered and frantically asked for Monica as the ground in front of him exploded. When Kayce woke from his bad dream, he looked to his left and saw Monica’s side of the bed was empty. While her death wasn’t explicitly stated up top, it was clear that Kayce was hurting. When he tried to get Tate to eat breakfast later that morning, he said, “Look, I know your mom was better at all this…” implying that she was gone. And after Kayce teamed up with the U.S. Marshals. they went to protect a Broken Rock protest — which Tate attended — and we finally learned the truth about Monica.
The protest was being held in honor of cancer victims who fell ill and died because of toxins dumped onto the rez. When Kayce found Tate and told him to go home in case things turned violent, Tate said, “After how much mom suffered? You should be leading the charge here, not waving the white flag.” Tate held up a framed photo of Monica, confirming that she was one of the people who died of cancer. When Rainwater saw Kayce, he said, “I don’t think we’ve seen you on Broken Rock since Monica’s burial,” and Kayce told him that Monica picked out her favorite spot on East Camp for him to visit her.
Following one heck of an adventure with the Marshals, Rainwater’s near-death experience, some words of wisdom about piya wiconi (or “new beginnings”), and a heart-to-heart with Tate, Kayce ended the premiere at Monica’s grave. Before the end credits rolled he tearfully said, “I miss you, baby! I miss my wife, my best friend, my only friend. I’ve been so lost. The best part of me died with you. You always told me to fight for the life I want, but I had the life I wanted. It was with you. I’m changing paths. I’ll try to find a new beginning for me and Tate. I love you, baby.” BRB, sobbing!
Why Isn’t Kelsey Asbille In Marshals? Why Did Kelsey Asbille Leave The Yellowstone Spin-off?
Since the major death was kept under wraps until the premiere, the Marshals team or Asbille haven’t publicly addressed her/Monica’s departure yet. But we’ll likely learn more about the departure in postmortem interviews. For now, we do have some insight from Grimes and showrunner Spencer Hudnut, who touched on Monica’s death during an exclusive press conference with members of the Television Critics Association earlier this year.
“Our show picks up about a year to 15 months after the end of Yellowstone. And so, in that time period [Monica] got sick and unfortunately passed away. For me, and for Luke, and for others who were involved in Yellowstone, it was important that we used that death. We’re shining a light on an issue. On reservations, the cancer rate is actually extremely high. And through that, that’s actually what pulls Kayce into this world,” Hudnut told TCA members. “At least in my mind, Monica is kind of guiding Kayce as he’s trying to find his new path. And so, really honoring that character who was such a great, important piece of Yellowstone, was really important to all of us. She really exists and lives on in this series.”
Grimes shared that when Yellowstone ended, he “didn’t see any chance of continuing, especially because Kayce’s arc ended so perfectly.” Monica’s death is certainly a major source of conflict that knocks Kayce back down to an emotional rock bottom and offers the opportunity to rebuild.
“I thought anything past [Yellowstone] is going to be boring to watch. He’s happy, so that’s no fun. There’s no drama there. And when they started bringing up the fact that they were considering doing this, I just — I couldn’t wrap my head around it until I met Spencer. He and I had a Zoom, and I just really liked him and I really liked his ideas… Where we meet [Kasey], he’sat the end of his emotional road. His wife has passed away,” Grimes told TCA members. “Basically, Taylor and I talked about from the beginning, that was sort of Romeo and Juliet. They were like twin flames, they belonged together. So, he loses his soul mate. There’s really nothing darker than that.”

Grimes also told TCA members that he was skeptical about the major death at first, but ultimately came around after realizing Kayce’s new path. “I remember even thinking, ‘How is this going to work? Maybe that’s too sad. Maybe that’s too much drama to just watch this guy be in so much pain.’ But the really great device of our show is that Kayce finds a purpose and a reason to get up in the morning,” Grimes explained. “That comes from his old SEAL buddy who finds him and says, ‘Hey, I figured out a way to turn my life around, and deal with my demons, and use our skillset to help out others.’ So, through that, Kayce slowly but surely starts to find his way, a reason, and a purpose.”
Monica played a crucial role in Yellowstone for five seasons and is credited in 53 episodes. Though her character was controversial for some, she was beloved by many, and from the sounds of Hudnut and Grimes’ comments, the decision to embark on a new chapter without her sounds largely creative. Still, fans will hopefully get to hear from Asbille and see her again on-screen somehow…
Will Kelsey Asbille Be In Marshals At All?
While Monica is dead in Marshals, we know that Yellowstone loved a good flashback. So perhaps Asbille can return as Monica in that capacity to tell unseen Marshals era stories.
In the trailer, fans caught a brief glimpse of Kayce and Tate staring at a bed as a body was covered with a white sheet, which we didn’t see in the premiere. And a mystery woman with a blanket wrapped around her shoulders was also seen walking up beside Kayce towards the end of the trailer, so fingers crossed we haven’t said goodbye to Monica for good and Asbille can make some sort of appearance on Marshals.
