Sydney Sweeney says how she tunes out 'noise' after 'good jeans' furor

Sydney Sweeney recently shared her approach to handling criticism after facing significant backlash earlier this year.

A major point of controversy was her American Eagle commercial, which went viral and sparked outrage on social media. Critics controversially likened it to ‘Nazi propaganda’ due to its use of the phrase ‘good genes’ alongside Sweeney’s blonde, blue-eyed appearance.

On the other hand, many people defended the actress, labeling the uproar as ‘unhinged’ and suggesting detractors were overanalyzing the ad.

The 28-year-old actress also faced criticism from some liberal fans upon the revelation that she is a registered Republican.

Sweeney’s personal life has also been under the microscope. She ended her engagement with Jonathan Davino, 42, and later reportedly had a brief romance with music executive Scooter Braun, 44.

Now, however, Sydney has shared that she is able to ignore the cacophony of public chatter about her, and she explained how she does so to Extra.

‘You just know who you are. And the people who matter and are your friends and your family, they know who I am,’ shared the Euphoria bombshell.

‘And… to me, like, that’s what’s most important. Everything else is just noise… none of it’s real. And I’m just surrounded by really good people. And I love my job and I love my characters and I just stay focused,’ added Sydney.

The American Eagle ad, entitled Sydney Sweeney Has Great Jeans, shows its star buttoning up a set of denim trousers and offering a playful pun on the word ‘genes.’

‘Genes are passed down from parents to offspring, often determining traits like hair color, personality and even eye color…my genes are blue,’ the Sydney says.

The campaign was met with an explosion of controversy, as social media users feverishly accused the ad of being racist and flirting with eugenics in light of its star’s blonde-haired, azure-eyed appearance.

However American Eagle insiders subsequently shared that about 70% of respondents to independent polling had a positive reaction to the promo, via TMZ.

Sydney responded to the backlash in a new interview, refusing to apologize for the ads and winning approval from her fans in the process.

‘I did a jean ad. The reaction definitely was a surprise, but I love jeans. All I wear are jeans. I’m literally in jeans and a T-shirt every day of my life,’ she told GQ.

When she was asked about Donald Trump praising the ad as ‘fantastic,’ Sydney declined to take the bait and instead talked in general terms about how she responded to the massive surge of public attention.

‘It was surreal… it’s not that I didn’t have that feeling, but I wasn’t thinking of it like that. Or like, of any of it. I kind of just put my phone away. I was filming [Euphoria] every day,’ explained the Spokane, Washington native.

Then she faced a point-blank inquiry about the online accusations that the ads promoted ideas of ‘genetic superiority.’

She once again refused to be drawn into a political discussion, saying: ‘I think that when I have an issue that I want to speak about, people will hear.’
