Taye Diggs and his teenage son seem to share a fondness for the same celebrity.
The actor, known for his role in “The Best Man Holiday,” recently disclosed in an interview with Us Weekly that both he and his 16-year-old son, Walker, have a celebrity crush on the rapper Latto.
“My son and I both enjoy Latto,” Diggs revealed. “He doesn’t know how much I like her, but when he talks about her, I just nod and say, ‘Yeah, I can see that.’”
Diggs, now 54, shares his son Walker with his ex-wife, Idina Menzel. The couple married in 2003 but parted ways in 2013, finalizing their divorce a year later. Although they have successfully co-parented over the years, Diggs admits that Menzel takes the lead in handling the more emotionally demanding aspects of parenting.
“His mother does the heavy lifting,” Diggs explained. “The intensity of a mother-son relationship is something I’ll never fully grasp, but she deals with things more intensely. As a father, when Walker goes through his quiet teenage phases, I try not to take it personally. I understand he’s a teenager, a boy, and has hormones.”
Still, Diggs says the two have found a rhythm that keeps Walker at the center of it all.
“Both of us realized that if we just both think of Walker first, then it kind of falls into place. And that’s exactly what has happened thus far. And luckily, he’s a good kid, so we don’t have to worry about him trying to be, you know, him manipulating us or setting one parent against the other. You know, he’s a good guy, so we just go off of what he gives us. And up to this point, it’s been OK,” he continued.
Taye also revealed that Walker has no problem stepping in when his dad’s dating life gets tricky. Diggs says he often consults his son for honest feedback when getting to know someone new.
“I’ll meet people, then I’ll show [him] pictures or videos and ask, you know, if he thinks someone’s corny or if someone looks like they’re trying too hard,” he told the outlet. “We have very similar tastes, but his is a little bit more keen. His is sharper. Whatever he tells me kind of lines up with something that I feel somewhere inside. So he’ll just like, double that, reiterate and that’ll let me know I should listen to my gut.”
And yes, Walker will absolutely tell him when someone is not the one. “He’ll be like, ‘No,’” the His, Hers & Ours star admitted. “It makes things a lot easier.”
The How Stella Got Her Groove Back alum is currently staring in Terry McMillan Presents: His, Hers & Ours, now streaming on Lifetime, Lifetime Movie Club, and on-demand platforms.
