Two summers ago, Taylor Swift and Matty Healy made headlines with their breakup, and his mom just opened up about it. Denise Welch, an actor and television personality, recently said that she’s glad her son didn’t tie the knot with Swift. Now, the singer’s fans are slamming her for her comments.

In a recent appearance on Watch What Happens Live, Andy Cohen asked Welch how she felt about The Tortured Poet’s Department. Many fans have assumed the album is about Swift’s relationship with Healy.
“Obviously, on pain of death, can I talk about that episode, but being her mother-in-law is a role that I am glad that I lost,” she said.
When the studio audience gasped, Welch quickly followed this up by saying, “Not that I have anything against her at all! It was just — it was tricky.”
She also noted that she thinks it’s unfair that Swift wrote an album about the relationship.
“Listen — you’re not allowed to say anything and then she writes a whole album about it,” she said. “But Matty has taken it all in completely good grace. He is very happy with his amazing fiancée, Gabbriette.”

Swift’s dedicated army of fans have turned on Welch. Some people say Swift dodged a bullet by not having Welch as her mother-in-law.
“Ooof she’s messy!” wrote one Reddit user. “It would be hard to deal with her as a mother in law!”
“Yeah I’m sure Taylor is real put out about not having to have to deal with this peach ever again,” wrote another person.
“Taylor might have dodged a nuclear bomb,” added someone else.
Many people took particular umbrage with her comment about Swift’s album, noting that Healy also could write about Swift if he wants.
“Mind you, Matty Healy can also write an album about her if he wants?? Taylor has never actually said his name or spoke about him, she just wrote her album and people connected songs to him,” wrote one person. “No one is stopping him from doing the same thing. The daughter in law comment was just mean and unnecessary. Her younger son said himself that Taylor was nothing but kind to this family.”
Many fans think Welch is commenting on the relationship so long after the breakup because she wants attention.
“I think she just loves the attention it’s gotten her, she was gushing about TS on British TV when they were a thing so it didn’t seem to bother her then. This just feels like clout chasing or fame by proxy (and I’m no TS fan).”
Swift’s fans never liked Healy, so he has unsurprisingly caught some strays from fans mad at his mother.
“I am just now discovering Matt Healy is a nepobaby and suddenly so much about him makes so much more sense,” wrote one person.
“She has Matty Healy for a son, I don’t think she’s the winner she thinks she is,” commented someone else.
The couple broke up in 2023
Shortly after Swift’s breakup from longtime boyfriend Joe Alwyn, she began dating Healy. They’d known each other for years, and the relationship turned romantic in 2023. Things fizzled out by June of that year, though.
“Taylor and Matty broke up. They are both extremely busy and realized they’re not really compatible with each other,” a source told Entertainment Tonight. “Taylor’s friends want what’s best for her and aren’t shocked that their relationship fizzled out, since she recently got out of a long-term relationship.”
Both have since moved on to other relationships.
