The opening track of Taylor’s The Life of a Showgirl draws on the tragic story of Ophelia, the Shakespearean character from Hamlet whose fate has become synonymous with heartbreak and despair.
In the song, Taylor suggests she “might’ve drowned in the melancholy” if her true love had not arrived to pull her from it.
“I heard you calling / On the megaphone,” Taylor sings. “You wanna see me all alone.”
The lines appear to reference Travis calling Taylor out on his New Heights podcast after she failed to meet him during her Eras Tour stop—the moment that helped set their relationship in motion.
“I swore loyalty to me, myself and I,” the lyrics continue, “Right before you lit my sky up.”

Before Travis entered the picture, Taylor had recently ended her relationship with Matty Healy. In July 2023, she was embracing her status among the “independent girlies.”
That changed after Travis attended Taylor’s concert in Kansas City later that month, with the pair’s connection quickly turning into something more.
Taylor’s fiancé has since joined her famous Easter egg tradition, teasing the lyrics to “The Fate of Ophelia” on Instagram in July. “Had some adventures this offseason,” he wrote in a caption accompanying photos with Taylor, adding, “Kept it [100].”
The connection becomes clear in the song’s next lines: “You dug me out of my grave and saved my heart from the fate of Ophelia / Keep it one hundred.”
