HBO’s A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms doesn’t feature many female characters, and now the show’s captivating leading lady has departed from Ashford.
**Spoiler Alert for Episode 4 “Seven” of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, currently available on HBO Max**
In the fourth episode, titled “Seven,” Steely Pate (portrayed by Youssef Kerkour) informs Ser Duncan the Tall (played by Peter Claffey) that Tanselle (Tanzyn Crawford) left Ashford swiftly to avoid the wrath of Prince Aerion (Finn Bennett). Her destination was her homeland, Dorne, where she hoped to find safety.
Viewers familiar with A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms understand Tanselle’s prudent decision. Prince Aerion began tormenting her after she enacted a stage play where her knight character vanquished a dragon. Dunk intervened to rescue her, leading him to his own peril in a suspenseful Trial of Seven. Thus, Tanselle’s choice to flee was a wise one.
Nevertheless, Tanselle’s departure leaves the budding romance between her and Dunk unresolved. Although George R.R. Martin has only released three “Dunk and Egg” novellas, and Tanselle doesn’t reappear in the subsequent two, this doesn’t definitively close the door on a future reunion between the two towering figures.
A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms showrunner Ira Parker told The Hollywood Reporter that Martin has given him outlines for twelve more “Dunk and Egg” tales.
“These stories take them all the way through their lives,” Parker told THR. “Some of these are just a paragraph, but they give you a sense of where they’re going to go and the people who come back in and out of the story.”
Could Tanselle be one of the characters who returns to the larger story?
“I’ve grown to love the character of Tanselle and I would love to see her journey continue,” A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms actress Tanzyn Crawford told DECIDER. “And I think the connection, although brief, that Duncan and her build, I think it’s worth more. So yeah, I’m excited to see what happens.”
Crawford also shared that Tanselle’s “connection” with Dunk is one that shifts after he saves her from Aerion.
“In the beginning, it’s not so much a mutual attraction. I think it grows over the the episodes,” Crawford said. “But I mean the massive gesture that Dunk does for Tanselle is obviously a huge turning point. So I definitely feel like after that feelings change.”
So there’s hope for these beautiful tall people yet!
A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms Episode 5 “In the Name of the Mother” comes out on Sunday, February 15 on HBO and HBO Max.
