‘Outlander’ Showrunner Weighs in on Whether William Ransom Committed Incest with Jane Pocock: “Well, He Didn’t Know”

Outlander Season 7 saved its most mind-boggling reveal for last. After five seasons of believing that Claire (Caitriona Balfe) and Jamie (Sam Heughan) lost their firstborn daughter, Faith, the Starz show is implying that Faith Fraser was not actually stillborn. In fact, she not only lived, but also might be the mother of Jane (Silvia Presente) and Fannie Pocock (Florrie Mae Wilkinson).

This humdinger of a cliffhanger ending doesn’t explain how Faith survived, although it implies the mysteriously-powered Master Raymond (Dominique Pinon) is responsible for the girl’s resurrection. It also doesn’t confirm whether or not Fannie’s mother Faith is the same Faith whom Claire sang the 1909 tune, “I Do Like to Be Beside the Seaside,” to as a lullaby…even if it’s strongly hinted to be the case.

Most pertinently, though, the Outlander Season 7 finale does nothing to clarify what this reveal means for William Ransom (Charles Vandervaart) and his now dead lover, Jane.

If Jane Pocock was secretly Faith’s daughter this whole time, does that mean that William slept with his niece? After all, William is Jamie’s son, meaning Faith would be his half-sister.

When DECIDER caught up with Outlander showrunner and EP Matthew B. Roberts last night, the very first thing we asked him was what the Faith twist meant for William and Jane’s relationship.

“Well, if that is true, then yes, he did,” Roberts said, carefully tiptoeing around whether or not Claire’s theory is true. “And how do you feel about it?”

DECIDER admitted that we weren’t sure if liked “that level of incest” in the Fraser/MacKenzie family tree.

“Well, he didn’t know, so there’s that,” he said.

“You know, again, I think [the audience] having feelings about story points is our job,” Roberts said, explaining that “it doesn’t matter what the feeling is,” so long as the audience comes away with one.

“As long as you’re having opinions about it, this is all good,” he said. “Then you want to come back and watch more.”

While Roberts wouldn’t clarify if Jane and Fanny are for sure Frasers, he promised we will “see where it goes in Season 8.”

“I promise you of that. You will you will literally see how it unfolds and how it affects Jamie and Claire.”

For DECIDER’s full chat with Roberts, be sure to check back next week, at the very beginning of this final Droughtlander.
