Robin Roberts' Absence From 'GMA' Explained — And When She's Coming Back

Good Morning America viewers have noticed Robin Roberts‘ recent absence from the show — but how long will she be gone?

Roberts, 64, became a staple on ABC after joining as a coanchor in 2005. While wrapping up the July 24 episode of the morning show, Roberts announced she was taking time off with wife Amber Laign.

In addition to Roberts’ break, George Stephanopoulos was on vacation — with ESPN’s Joe Buck filling in. Roberts’ role, meanwhile, was temporarily taken over by Rebecca Jarvis.

As viewers wait for Roberts’ return, they should look no further than her social media to find out what she’s doing in the meantime. Roberts celebrated her and Laign’s 20th anniversary days after her last appearance on GMA.

GMA3 has gone through several anchor changes following Amy Robach and T.J. Holmes’ departure — and now ABC viewers are questioning the show’s future. The Good Morning America spinoff debuted in 2018 as a replacement for The Chew. The morning show was originally hosted by Michael Strahan and Sara Haines. After Haines went on maternity […]

“Twenty years … and counting,” she said in a July 28 Instagram video. “So we’re going away. We’re going abroad, and we’re going [to] a place that many have on their bucket list.”

At the time, Roberts confirmed she wasn’t hosting GMA due to a volunteer trip to Kigali, Rwanda, writing in a social media post, “We’re in #Rwanda as guests of @inmuwetrust_ & @giantsofafrica celebrating young basketball players across Africa. Every last Saturday in the month in Rwanda is a national day of service.”

Laign, who has been married to Roberts since 2023, has also documented the philanthropic getaway.

“20 Years, 20 Countries, One Incredible Journey,” she wrote via Instagram. “Robin and I celebrated our 20-year anniversary in a way we’ll never forget. In Rwanda, with Giants of Africa, surrounded by the energy, joy, and spirit of youth from 20 African countries.”

Laign, 50, concluded: “We’re beyond grateful to have shared this milestone in such a powerful and uplifting way. Thank you, Giants of Africa, for letting us be part of something so meaningful.”

While Roberts’ return date hasn’t been officially confirmed, multiple outlets reported she would be back the first week of August.

Roberts’ brief break came one month after DeMarco Morgan and Eva Pilgrim both left GMA3. Pilgrim’s move to Inside Edition came after ABC News grouped its overnight programming and GMA3 with Good Morning America as a way to cut costs. Pilgrim, 42, and Morgan’s respective departures sparked questions about who would be taking over in their place — or whether this was the end for the show.

“What we have said from the beginning is that we are unifying all day parts under the GMA umbrella and team and that includes seeing all members of the extended GMA family in the third hour,” a spokesperson told the New York Post in April. “The third hour is a valued part of the GMA franchise.”

There has also been speculation about Stephanopoulos, 64, Roberts and Michael Strahan playing a more active role in GMA3. According to the ABC spokesperson, “Robin, George, and Michael have been on before, and they will continue to be featured.”
