Dolly Parton will receive an honorary Oscar this year. Here’s why the Academy is giving her a humanitarian award.

Dolly Parton has received two Oscar nominations for Best Original Song in 1981 and 2006. While she did not take home the awards on either of these occasions, Parton will now receive an honorary Oscar. On November 16, Parton will receive the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award, which the Academy gives for a person’s contributions to humanitarian causes.

Dolly Parton will receive an honorary Oscar

In 1981, Parton received an Oscar nomination for the song “9 to 5.” She also received one for “Travelin’ Thru” in 2006. She lost to “Fame” and “It’s Hard Out Here for a Pimp.” This year, she will take home an honorary Oscar.

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences will give Parton the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award. Per Billboard, the award is given “to an individual in the motion picture arts and sciences whose humanitarian efforts have brought credit to the industry by promoting human welfare and contributing to rectifying inequities.” Debbie Allen, Tom Cruise, and Wynn Thomas will also receive honorary awards at the ceremony.

“This year’s Governors Awards will celebrate four legendary individuals whose extraordinary careers and commitment to our filmmaking community continue to leave a lasting impact,” Academy President Janet Yang said. “The Academy’s board of governors is honored to recognize these brilliant artists.”

Parton has already won multiple Grammys, an Emmy award, and nominations for a Tony award. This latest honor brings her closer to an EGOT.
