The controversy surrounding Timothee Chalamet’s remark that “no one cares” about opera and ballet intensified on Monday, as the popular quiz show Jeopardy! took a playful jab at the actor in a recent episode.

At just 30, the Oscar-nominated actor has ignited a heated debate within the arts community, and now even Jeopardy! has joined the conversation by featuring a category titled “Ballet and Opera.”

The official Instagram account for the show shared a video of contestants acing all their answers, with the caption ‘NOBODY @HIM [side-eye emoji] #timotheechalamet.’

Observers quickly picked up on the show’s subtle dig, with one commentator noting, “You know you messed up when even Jeopardy is throwing shade your way.”

“The best part is how it completely disproves his point—contestants answered at least one question in the category,” another viewer pointed out.

Someone else humorously added, “Dying art, huh? They breezed through those questions!”

‘What is: shadeeeeeee,’ another fan quipped.

‘Jeopardy to the arts: I got your back.’

‘I’ll take petty for $1000.’

Chalamet was blasted after saying he does not want to work in ballet or opera as ‘no one cares about it’.

Kylie Jenner’s boyfriend admitted to Matthew McConaughey in a Variety interview that he doesn’t want to work in an art that you ‘have to keep alive’.

‘I admire people, and I’ve done it myself, doing a talk show about how we’ve got to keep movie theatres alive, you know, we’ve got to keep this genre alive,’ he said.

‘And another part of me feels like, if people want to see it, like Barbie, like Oppenheimer, they’re going to go see it and go out of their way to be loud and proud about it.’

‘And I don’t want to be working in ballet or opera or, you know, things where it’s like, “hey, keep this thing alive”, even though no one cares about this any more.’

‘All respect to the ballet and opera people out there, I just lost 14 cents in viewership, I just took shots for no reason.’

It wasn’t the first time Chalamet made the claim.

Resurfaced fan footage from 2019 shows a young Chalamet making strikingly similar claims while promoting The King, as he told the crowd that opera and ballet are ‘dying art forms.’

The View’s Whoopi Goldberg addressed his recent comments on Monday’s episode, stating, ‘When you crap on somebody else’s art form, it doesn’t feel good. It doesn’t feel good to see.’

‘And you probably didn’t realize that until you said, “Oh, I’m in trouble,” but then you compounded it and said, like, “14 cents.” No, when people get mad, it’ll be a lot more than 14 cents.’

‘So be careful,’ she said, adding, ‘I’m just saying. Be careful, boy.’

Others, including Doja Cat and Jamie Lee Curtis, have slammed him for his comments as well.

His claim also prompted criticism on social media from those in the two industries, including New York City’s Metropolitan Opera, London’s Royal Ballet and Opera, and US opera singer Isabel Leonard.

Isabel wrote: ‘Honestly, I’m shocked that someone so seemingly successful can be so ineloquent and narrow-minded in his views about art while considering himself as an artist as I would only imagine one would as an actor.’

‘To take cheap shots at fellow artists says more in this interview than anything else he could say. Shows a lot about his character.’

‘You don’t have to like all art but only a weak person/artist feels the need to diminish in fact, the very arts that would inspire those who are interested in slowing down, to do exactly that.’

Canadian mezzo-soprano Deepa Johnny added in another comment: ‘What a disappointing take. There is nothing more impressive than the magic of live theatre, ballet and opera.’

Chalamet is currently in the middle of a high-stakes awards campaign for A24’s Marty Supreme, which earned him Oscar nominations for both Best Actor and, as a producer, Best Picture.

Despite the recent controversy, his chances for a win remain strong. While his comments went viral this week, Oscar voting officially closed on March 5, likely shielding him from any negative impact.

Chalamet faces stiff competition for the Best Actor trophy. He is up against Michael B. Jordan (Sinners), Leonardo DiCaprio (One Battle After Another), Wagner Moura (The Secret Agent) and Ethan Hawke (Blue Moon).
