Dean McDermott is strapped for cash. In a September 5 court filing, Tori Spelling’s ex admitted that he’s spending more money than he earns in his new career as a drug and alcohol counselor.

McDermott embraced a career pivot in October 2023, revealing that he’s struggled to find work as an actor since that year’s Hollywood strikes. The Due South actor currently earns $3,800 per month as a counselor, he said in documents obtained by Us Weekly. But his monthly expenses are $3,980 per month, putting him in the red. His girlfriend, Lily Calo, earns $600 per month.
The former Chopped Canada host is also carrying a significant amount of debt. He’s past due on payments for a $200,000 loan from City National Bank and has unpaid credit card and dental bills.

Spelling filed for divorce from McDermott in March 2024 after separating from him in June 2023. The pair married in 2006 and share five children.
McDermott has asked Spelling for spousal support. He says that she makes between $3,000 to $75,000 per month, depending on her job. The Beverly Hills, 90210 alum hosts the missSPELLING podcast, has appeared on recent seasons of Dancing With the Stars and The Masked Singer, and starred in the 2025 Lifetime movie Abducted in the Everglades.
During their nearly two decades together, Spelling and McDermott became notorious for racking up debt. The delinquent City National Bank loan mentioned in McDermott’s latest court filing appears to be his half of a loan he and Spelling took out in 2012 and have reportedly failed to repay, according to Page Six. At one point, Spelling also owed $88,000 to American Express. In 2023, she had a lien on her Calabasas home due to unpaid taxes.
Last year, Spelling joked that she might have to get creative to cover her kids’ college expenses.
“I’m gonna have to go on OnlyFans in order to get them into college,” she told actor William Shater on her podcast. She also said that she needed to focus on “educating my kids about money so they don’t turn out like me.”
The ‘Beverly Hills, 90210’ star ‘wasn’t taught how to function in the real world’
In a 2023 episode of MisSPELLING, Spelling admitted that she was a “hoarder” and in danger of losing items she’d stashed in storage units because of unpaid rent. The actor said she wished she’d learned more about how to manage money when she was young.
Spelling is the daughter of the late producer Aaron Spelling, once one of the richest men in Hollywood. But she received a relatively small inheritance after he died in 2006.
“I don’t want sympathy, but I was taught, or I wasn’t taught, how to function in the real world, and I’m doing the best I can,” she said. “I want to tell you something that’s not going to be shocking. I’m not good with money. I suck with money. I didn’t even know how to write a check until I was in my 40s.”
Spelling said she wishes she’d followed the lead of her 90210 castmates.
“All my co-stars were making investments. They were buying properties,” she said. “They were being smart about it. And I didn’t know, and I had no guidance at all.”
