According to TMZ, Katherine, who preferred a private life and worked as a social worker in Los Angeles, ended her life with a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
The Short family has issued a statement asking for privacy during this difficult time.
“With deep sorrow, we confirm the passing of Katherine Hartley Short,” a representative informed TMZ. “The Short family is heartbroken by this tragedy and requests privacy. Katherine was adored by many and will be fondly remembered for the joy and light she brought into the lives of others.”
TMZ further reports that Katherine was declared dead at her Hollywood Hills residence at approximately 6:40 p.m. PT on Monday, February 24, after the LAPD and fire department responded to a call concerning a suspected suicide.

According to People, Katherine’s website, which has since been taken down, stated that she studied psychology and gender sexuality studies at New York University in 2006 before later earning her master’s in social work from the University of Southern California in 2010.
Katherine worked as a licensed clinical social worker in addition to working part time at the Amae Health, a clinic where she offered community outreach, support groups, psychotherapy and peer support.
She is also involved with the charity Bring Change 2 Mind, a nonprofit organization co=founded by actress Glenn Close, dedicated to reducing stigma surrounding mental health.
She is survived by her father Martin, and her brothers, Oliver Patrick and Henry Hayter.
