UCL: Osimhen Faces Fan-Free Match in Crucial Liverpool Return Leg Due to UEFA Sanctions

Galatasaray is set to face Liverpool at Anfield in an upcoming Champions League match, but they will be without the backing of their fans due to recent sanctions imposed by UEFA. This decision comes after incidents of crowd misconduct during Galatasaray’s previous encounter with Juventus in Turin.

UEFA, the governing body of European football, has confirmed that Galatasaray supporters are prohibited from attending the away match scheduled for March 18. This ban follows unruly behavior during the February 25 match against Juventus, where fans were reported to have thrown objects and ignited fireworks.

The Turkish side managed to progress to the next round despite a narrow 3-2 loss in Italy, as they secured their spot with a 7-5 aggregate victory. This advancement sets the stage for their crucial showdown with Liverpool, albeit without the presence of their dedicated supporters.

Supporters were found to have thrown objects and set off fireworks during the 25 February encounter.

UEFA confirm sanctions

Despite losing 3-2 on the night in Italy, Galatasaray advanced 7-5 on aggregate to reach the next stage.

However, UEFA ruled that the Turkish champions cannot sell tickets to away supporters for the Liverpool fixture and issued a €40,000 fine.

The decision means Nigerian forward Victor Osimhen and his teammates will be without travelling fan support at Anfield in what is expected to be a high-intensity European night.

Galatasaray to appeal

In an official statement, Galatasaray confirmed they intend to challenge the ruling. The club described the punishment as disproportionate and said an appeal process is underway.

The first leg will take place in Istanbul next Tuesday before the decisive return fixture at Anfield.
