This captivating medical saga first aired on March 27, 2005, as a mid-season substitute, and it quickly won the hearts of viewers, becoming ABC’s longest-running scripted prime-time series.
Throughout its 21-year journey, the high mortality rate among the doctors at Seattle Grace hasn’t deterred patients or new, ambitious medical professionals from joining the team. The cast lineup continues to evolve, with Ellen Pompeo, Chandra Wilson, and James Pickett Jr. remaining as the last original members from the inaugural season, despite Meredith Grey’s absence from the show since 2022.
In an interview with El Pais in April, Pompeo, who also serves as an executive producer, reflected on her decision, saying, “After two decades, it felt like the right moment to step back. I’m fortunate to enjoy both work and leisure at my own pace.”
Kim Raver and Kevin McKidd, portraying the beloved duo Teddy and Owen, are the latest characters to have their departures scripted. Series creator Shonda Rhimes commented, “It’s a mix of emotions as we send off this couple with the happy ending they truly deserve.”
