The Department of Mass Communication at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN), has issued an official statement debunking the trending rumours linking one of its students, Ifeme Rebecca Yahoma, popularly known as Becky, to a false relationship narrative after an outing wither YouTuber, Asherkine.

This clarification follows a recent visit to the university by popular YouTuber and content creator, Asherkine, who reportedly took Becky on an expensive outing — treating her to shopping, gifting her a new phone, and other items worth millions of naira.

Prior to their hangout, Asherkine had asked Becky if she was in a relationship. She stated clearly that she was not and that she had never been in one.

However, hours after their meeting, a photo began circulating online showing Becky alongside a man alleged to be her boyfriend.

The image sparked widespread criticism, with many accusing her of dishonesty.

In response, the department has released a strongly worded statement to set the record straight:

Our attention has been drawn to a series of viral posts circulating across Instagram, Twitter, Snapchat, and Facebook. These posts falsely claim that our student, Ifeme Rebecca Yahoma (Becky), denied having a boyfriend due to the recent visit of celebrity guest Asherkine to UNN.”

“We wish to categorically state that these claims are entirely false, defamatory, and malicious.”

After a thorough investigation, we can confirm that the viral photo was heavily photoshopped and circulated by a certain Mr. Kenny, who falsely claims to be her boyfriend. His actions are a calculated attempt to tarnish her image, amounting to defamation and character assassination.”

As a department that upholds truth, integrity, and the dignity of individuals, we find this behavior unacceptable and condemn it in the strongest terms.

“Becky remains a respected and valued member of our department, and we will not stand by while her reputation is being attacked with falsehoods.”

We urge the public, especially students and social media users, to disregard these misleading claims and refrain from sharing any content that promotes this fabricated story. Continued dissemination of this defamatory material may result in legal consequences for those involved.”

Let us unite against cyberbullying, defamation, and the misuse of social media to spread harmful lies.”

The department’s statement serves as a call for responsible digital conduct and a stand against the weaponization of false narratives.
