The finale of Fallout Season 2 certainly delivered a dramatic conclusion, especially for fans following the journey of Maximus, played by Aaron Moten. His storyline, filled with intense moments, left viewers on the edge of their seats.
**Warning: This article contains spoilers for Fallout Season 2, Episode 8, now available on Prime Video.**
For two seasons, audiences have been on tenterhooks, eagerly anticipating the fate of The Ghoul’s family. Portrayed by Walton Goggins, this character’s wife, played by Frances Turner, and daughter, portrayed by Teagan Meredith, were believed to be in cryogenic stasis within a Vault-Tec bunker. The season finale finally addresses the mystery surrounding their survival.
Meanwhile, in New Vegas, tensions reach a peak involving Lucy, played by Ella Purnell, Hank, portrayed by Kyle MacLachlan, and Max. The climactic showdown forces Lucy to make a heart-wrenching choice, all while the threat of impending war looms large.
So, how does this season wrap up? What can we expect from Season 3? And perhaps most crucially, will we witness the long-awaited reunion of Janey, Barb, and Cooper/The Ghoul next season? Here’s a comprehensive look at the conclusions drawn from the Fallout Season 2 finale.
Fallout Season 2 Ending Explained: Is The Ghoul’s Family Alive?
Good news, we now officially know that at some point, Barb and Janey were alive and made it down into the vault for the Vault-Tec executives. We know this for sure because upon arrival at the bunker where he believes his wife and daughter to be, The Ghoul opens up their cryochambers to find that they are empty.
After a short beat where pessimism gets the best of him — no thanks to the disembodied voice of Robert House (Justin Theroux) egging him on — the Ghoul looks inside one of the cryochambers to discover something sitting a postcard at the bottom waiting for him.
Written on the back is a message, presumably left by Barb, reading, “Colorado was a good idea.” Not only does this give The Ghoul hope that his family is still out there, something he hasn’t had for 200-plus years, but it calls back to the idea that they were always a team, even when we thought they were most at odds with each other.
The good news is that we now know where Season 3 will take The Ghoul’s character as the final shot of Season 2 sees him headed for the Centennial State.
What Happens With Lucy and Hank in New Vegas?
As Lucy is being held in New Vegas by her father, The Ghoul and Maximus team up to get into the compound and make their way toward the vaults. While The Ghoul’s primary objective is to make it down to the vault where he believed his daughter and wife to be cryogenically frozen, Maximus is fully there to finally be reunited with Lucy.
As Maximus is outside the Lucky 38 casino, fighting off the deathclaws mostly successfully, The Ghoul is able to sneak in and locate Lucy just seconds before Hank is about to chip her. Up until that point, he had been mostly been trying to show her the benefits of his mind-control device, but after she cuffed him to a stove, the gloves come off and he attempts to take control of her. Thankfully, The Ghoul finds them just in time and shoots Hank in the butt, tossing the gun over to Lucy to leave her father’s fate in her own hands.
After taking her father hostage, Lucy leads him outside where Hank takes things into his own hands and uses his mind control device on himself, essentially making him a blank slate. This happens only after he tells her that he’s already sent out some of his chipped individuals into the wasteland to execute a mysterious mission.
After narrowly defeating the deathclaws outside of Lucky 38, Max — looking incredibly defeated, we might add — finally finds Lucy standing outside Robert House’s (Justin Theroux) casino. The two finally embrace and head into the casino where they watch as a rogue faction marches onward toward New Vegas.
So, what does it all mean? Here’s What We Know…
Season 3 is headed to a completely new area for the Fallout universe with The Ghoul, as he heads eastward to see if Janey and Barb are out there waiting for him. As far as the games go, it’s uncharted territory for the story as Colorado has yet to be explored.
Everyone else’s status? Unclear. With war on the horizon between the Brotherhood of Steel and Caesar’s Legion marching on New Vegas, so much is still up in the air. That doesn’t even get into the reveal of Steph (Annabel O’Hagan) having been married to Hank and initiating “phase two” on a transponder call to a mysterious base.
Long story short: Season 2’s finale is a whole lot of setting up Season 3. And what do we say to that, kids? Okey dokey.
Fallout Season 1 and Season 2 are now streaming on Prime Video.
