‘The Cult of the Real Housewife’ explores allegations of manipulation and financial pressure in Mary Cosby’s church

TLC’s latest docuseries, The Cult of the Real Housewife, takes a penetrating look at Mary Cosby, a star from Real Housewives of Salt Lake City, and the church she co-leads with her husband. The series critically examines accusations of cult-like practices made by former members of the Faith Temple Pentecostal Church.

The narrative unfolds over three episodes, delving into the church’s history, which traces back to Mary’s grandmother, Rosemary “Mama” Cosby. Rosemary was a revered figure within the congregation whose passing led to a shift in leadership to her husband, Robert Cosby Sr. The subsequent marriage between Robert and Mary, his step-granddaughter, became a source of contention and, according to some, marked a turning point in the church’s dynamics.

Among the voices in the docuseries is Dan Cosby, Mary’s cousin, who shared his insights with Fox News Digital. He painted a picture of a church environment dominated by fear and authoritative control.

“You were just afraid to leave. People were afraid of leaving,” Dan explained, emphasizing the potential harm to members.

Dan further alleged that what was often presented as spiritual counsel was, in reality, a form of manipulation. He described a church culture where financial and emotional pressures were commonplace, with leaders using guilt and scripture to coerce congregants into donating more money. This, he claimed, fostered an atmosphere driven more by fear than genuine faith.

The docuseries also revisits RHOSLC Season 2, when former church member Cameron appeared on the show and claimed he took out a $300,000 second mortgage on his home and gave the money to Mary — a moment that brought the church’s alleged financial practices into the public spotlight.

Dan’s wife, Kim Cosby, also appears in the series, describing the emotional toll of teachings that forced members to choose between family and faith.

“If I said I’m going to go home and cook… then I’m putting him above God,” she said, adding that obedience was framed as a constant test of loyalty.

Despite the trauma they describe, Dan said the family is beginning to heal.

“After 20 years … this year, 2025, and with the help of ‘The Cult of the Real Housewife’ … my family — Kim, my daughters, my grandchildren — I am in their lives, and we are stronger than we’ve ever been,” he said.

TLC’s The Cult of the Real Housewife is now streaming on HBO Max and Discovery+. You can find out more info right here.
