Born Taylor Alison Swift in West Reading, Pennsylvania, her parents named her after the singer-songwriter James Taylor, favoring a unisex name they believed would aid her career. Her father, Scott Kingsley Swift, worked as a stockbroker for Merrill Lynch, and her mother, Andrea Gardner Swift, had a career in mutual fund marketing.
Swift was raised alongside her younger brother, Austin, who has pursued a career in acting. Their upbringing included a Christian foundation, with Taylor attending a Montessori preschool and kindergarten operated by the Bernardine Sisters of St. Francis before progressing to the Wyndcroft School in Pottstown. Swift had a passion for music at a young age, and she rose fast from roles in children’s theatre to her first appearance in front of thousands of people. Swift drew inspiration from country music singers like Shania Twain and the Dixie Chicks (now the Chicks) to create fresh material that reflected her own experiences with tween alienation. Swift’s parents sold their farm in Pennsylvania when she was 13 to go to Hendersonville, Tennessee, so she could spend more time wooing country labels in nearby Nashville.

In the United States, it opened at number one on the Billboard 200 with 2.6 million first-week sales and remained there for seventeen weeks, making it Swift’s longest-running chart-topping album. The album was the global best-seller of 2024, selling 5.6 million pure copies. Its tracks made her the first artist to occupy the top fourteen spots on the Billboard Hot 100 in the same week that the lead single, “Fortnight,” climbed to number one, and the second single, “I Can Do It with a Broken Heart,” peaked at number three. On May 30, 2025, Swift completed the purchase of the masters for her first six original albums from Shamrock Holdings, which had bought them from Braun in 2020. Swift started dating football player Travis Kelce in August 2023, and the media dubbed them a “supercouple”.

The album’s tracks occupied the top twelve slots on the Billboard Hot 100, with the lead single, “The Fate of Ophelia,” reaching number one; it later became her first song to top the chart for ten consecutive weeks.
