When Decider chatted with Mack ahead of Ted Lasso‘s Season 4 premiere, here’s what they had to say about Boots and “absolutely terrible” experience of filming those intense soccer/football scenes without gloves.
“I think most of my acting in this show is me trying not to scream and flinch when those pro footballers were kicking the ball at like 90 mph at the goal. And I have to be like, ‘I don’t fear the ball!’ It was crazy,” Mack told Decider over Zoom. Despite challenges on the pitch, the Season 4 star was ecstatic to land the unique role in Ted Lasso.
“I think it’s such a gift to play a character who’s arrogant and thinks she’s the best. I think that is really fun and quite rare. [This season] it’s less about her ego getting a hit, and it’s more about her moving [away] from that isolated individualist position that she’s in as the goalkeeper towards community and connection,” Mack explained. “I think there is something for her to learn about putting the gloves on, or not putting the gloves on, and what does that mean for her, and what’s she holding herself back from.”
