Acclaimed Nigerian artist Aituaje Iruobe, known to her fans as Waje, has put to rest longstanding rumors about a romantic connection with rapper M.I.
These whispers began circulating in the early 2010s, fueled by the pair’s collaborations on several songs with romantic themes, which led fans to speculate about an off-screen romance.
Recently, Waje addressed these rumors during an appearance on The Honest Bunch podcast, where she set the record straight about her relationship with the rapper.
“People assumed we were dating because of the romantic narrative in our song ‘One Naira.’ However, we were never anything more than friends. Our collaboration was purely about creating a story through music and developing characters to make the song resonate,” she explained.
“Because of the romantic storyline in our song One Naira, many assumed we were dating. That was never the case. We were just friends exploring a love story through music, creating characters to bring the song to life,” she said.
Waje also revealed that M.I.’s girlfriend at the time contributed the voice-over for the track, not her.
The singer added that she is currently single and has no interest in being with an unsuccessful partner, noting that she’s no longer in her twenties and prefers not to invest time in the wrong relationship.
