At 33, Ahmed Musa has bid farewell to international football, closing the curtain on a remarkable 15-year stint with the Super Eagles. The announcement came on Wednesday, December 17, marking the end of a journey that saw him earn an unparalleled 111 appearances for Nigeria.
Musa reminisced about his beginnings, juggling roles with the U-20, U-23, and senior teams. He recalled, “I was just a young boy when the journey started… Whenever Nigeria called, I showed up. It was never something I had to think twice about.” Achieving the status of Nigeria’s most capped player is a distinction he cherishes with “deep respect.”
Throughout his career, Musa achieved numerous significant feats, such as winning the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations and becoming Nigeria’s top World Cup goalscorer. He remarked, “Scoring at the World Cup, against Argentina and Iceland, are memories I will always carry with me,” highlighting that the 2013 AFCON victory remains a pinnacle of his national career.
As he steps back with contentment, Musa expressed gratitude to his teammates, coaches, and fans for their unwavering support. He ended his heartfelt farewell with, “Once an Eagle, always an Eagle. Thank you, Nigeria. Thank you for everything.” Though retired from the national stage, Musa continues his involvement in club football, serving as both general manager and player for Kano Pillars.
