Vinícius Júnior emerged as the decisive factor in Real Madrid’s challenging away win against Benfica, a match marked by intense gameplay and a dash of controversy.

The initially friendly atmosphere, highlighted by the pre-match handshake between Benfica’s coach José Mourinho and Madrid’s Álvaro Arbeloa, quickly transformed into a fierce battle, especially in the second half.

Cagey first half

Benfica started on the front foot, launching direct attacks at Madrid’s defense. Real Madrid’s goalkeeper, Thibaut Courtois, was tested early on, making a crucial low save to stop Fredrik Aursnes.

As the match progressed, Madrid began to gain control. Arda Güler teamed up with Trent Alexander-Arnold to orchestrate the most promising chance of the period, though their cross just missed connecting with Kylian Mbappé.

In the closing minutes of the first half, Mbappé and Güler both forced saves from Benfica’s goalkeeper, Anatoliy Trubin, but the Portuguese side’s defense stayed resilient until halftime.

Vinicius sparks drama

Five minutes into the second half, Vinícius delivered the breakthrough. Cutting in from the left, he curled a powerful strike into the top corner from a tight angle, leaving Trubin with no chance.

The Brazilian’s celebration was followed by a booking and a heated exchange with Benfica’s Gianluca Prestianni.

Vinícius appeared to alert officials to alleged racist abuse, prompting referee François Letexier to activate the anti-racism protocol.

After a lengthy delay and a red card for a Benfica staff member, play resumed in a tense atmosphere.

Benfica pushed forward in response, but Madrid’s defense led by Antonio Rüdiger and Aurélien Tchouaméni remained strong.

Further controversy followed when Mourinho was sent off after protesting a challenge involving Vinícius. Benfica threatened from the resulting free-kick but failed to find an equaliser.

Madrid closed out the match, taking a slender advantage back to the Santiago Bernabéu.
