Here come the brides!

The eagerly awaited second season of Percy Jackson and the Olympians has finally arrived, thrilling fans who have been on tenterhooks for two years. No one is more enthusiastic about this than the series’ star, Walker Scobell, who plays Percy Jackson himself.

Before Season 2 premiered on Disney+, the 16-year-old actor shared insights with DECIDER about the thrill of adapting the second installment of Rick Riordan’s beloved series. A significant highlight for Scobell was a pivotal scene where both Percy and Grover, portrayed by Aryan Simhadri, don dresses to evade Polyphemus. Scobell expressed his excitement and surprise over this creative twist.

“I received the script about a month before filming began. When I reached Episode 2, I was in awe. The standout moment for me was definitely the wedding dress scene. It was arguably the most stunning dress I could ever imagine wearing,” Scobell shared with a chuckle. “I probably wore the loveliest wedding dress my family line has ever seen.”

In the original novel, Percy Jackson and the Olympians: Sea of Monsters, Grover sneaks into a boutique to acquire a dress, aiming to disguise himself as a bride for Polyphemus. The book explains that Polyphemus—the mythological cyclops and son of Poseidon—has such poor vision that he fails to realize Grover is actually a male satyr.

In the show, Grover is already washed up on an island in the middle of the sea when he finds a dress in a shipwreck and dons it to keep himself safe from Polyphemus, who is keeping him in close quarters. Part of the show’s second season hinges on Percy, Annabeth (Leah Sava Jeffries), and Clarisse (Dior Goodjohn) racing against the clock to save him as the “wedding day” approaches.

Unlike in the Sea of Monsters, the second episode of the series has both Grover and Percy wear the dress to mask their true identities from Polyphemus for the short time that they are able to connect via a dream. According to Scobell, dream is the perfect word for the situation, seeing as it brought him closer than he ever thought to one particular member of his family.

“We were comparing pictures [of me in the dress] to my mom on her wedding day, I look very similar to her, actually,” Scobell joked. “It was very close.”

He added, “Aryan and I were having arguments to try to figure out who looked better in it.”

As for Simhadri’s take on the situation and having to share the dress with Scobell, it was no skin off his back, he told DECIDER in a separate interview. According to him, he’s not too worried about the fans comparing the two of them as he knows who the clear winner is.

“I don’t think I’m worried about who wore it best. I mean, it’s not much of a competition,” the Freakier Friday actor joked.
