Weleda Skin Food is my in-flight skin care routine hero

I’m someone who hates change — except for when it came to upping my skin care routine. As any good beauty enthusiast knows, flying is one of your skin’s worst enemies, right behind over-exfoliating and forgetting to wear SPF. That’s why an in-flight skin care routine has changed the game for me.

All over TikTok, you’ll see influencers and normies alike doing an aggressive 10-step in-flight skin care routine complete with sheet masks, toners and more. IMO (and according to my dermatologist!), you don’t need all that. What you do need, though, is a clean face, a good, thick occlusive moisturizer and sunscreen. So easy!

For me, that’s the forever trusty Weleda Skin Food. And, yes, I would rather forget my passport than go on a flight without it. (It also smells like Fruity Pebbles, which is great if your row partner thinks it’s cool to take off their shoes mid-flight.)

Before my flight, I cleanse my face with a micellar-water-soaked cotton pad or a makeup wipe to get off dirt any makeup, dirt and residue. Then, I slather a layer of Weleda Skin Food all over my face, neck and hands. Then, I top it off with sunscreen and drink an ungodly amount of water for hydration. Le fin.

Weleda Skin Food Original Ultra-Rich Cream, $16.29 (Orig. $18.50)

While it’s been a staple in my routine (and many others) for decades, Skin Food has been popping off on TikTok thanks to just how wild it is at moisturizing. The ultra-rich formula contains extracts of pansy, chamomile and calendula to soothe and nourish the skin.

One of the reasons I love Skin Food is that it’s dermatologically tested, free of synthetic fragrances and never tested on animals. And if clean beauty is important to you, it’s also free of synthetic colors, preservatives and raw materials derived from mineral oils.

Now, when I was first recommended Skin Food by my friend, I hesitated. As someone with acne- and irritation-prone skin who uses intense prescription topical treatments nightly, I was put off by the rich, oily consistency and fragrance. Obviously, I’ve tried it since, and it’s only soothed, calmed and moisturized my skin.

But, if you have finicky skin like me, definitely consult your derm about the ingredient list if you’re feeling iffy. Key ingredients include lanolin, peanut oil, sweet almond oil, alcohol, beeswax, essential oils, pansy, chamomile and calendula.

While I love the rich cream for flights, Weleda also makes a lighter version of Skin Food that you can shop!
