Details are trickling in about CBS’s highly anticipated Blue Bloods spinoff. 

Earlier this year, the network confirmed that it was moving forward with a new show focused on Donnie Wahlberg’s Danny Reagan character. The series will follow the NYPD detective as he takes a new job in Boston. It will premiere this fall, airing in Blue Bloods’ old Friday at 10 p.m. timeslot. 

Maggie Lawson, Sonequa Martin-Green, and Ernie Hudson join ‘Boston Blue’ cast 

Of course, Danny’s move to Boston means he’ll be getting a new partner. Star Trek: Discovery alum Sonequa Martin-Green will play Boston PD officer Lena Silver. Like Danny, she comes from a prominent law enforcement family. 

Also joining the cast ifs Psych‘s Maggie Lawson. She plays Sarah Silver, Lena’s stepsister and a Boston PD superintendent. Ghostbusters star Ernie Hudson plays Reverend Peters, the patriarch of the blended Peters family, which also includes Boston DA Mae Silver and rookie patrol cop Isaac Silver, according to Deadline. 

While the new show is set in Boston, filming will reportedly take place in Toronto.

Donnie Wahlberg says ‘Boston Blue’ is an ‘incredible opportunity’ 

Last month, Wahlberg teased the new show during an interview with Extra, saying that he hopes it will appeal to loyal Blue Bloods fans who’ve been missing the show since it wrapped its 14-season run in late 2024. 

“I think it’s an incredible opportunity,” the New Kids on the Block member said. “I love the Reagan family. Viewers love the Reagan family. And it went away. And here’s an opportunity to bring it back, to carry on those traditions … I think the audience will get what we’re doing when they see the show.” 

Martin-Green said she was thrilled to be working with Wahlberg on the new series.  

“Listen, he and everyone there at Blue Bloods, in front of and behind the camera, they built something that lasts,” she said. “Not only has it already lasted, I think it’s going to continue to last. And that’s because I think family was at the center of it … it’s a big deal to come into this legacy.” 

“I think it’s going to provide something that people need,” she added. “I think it’s going to be optimism and hope and family. And I think it’s going to be good for people. I really do.” 

Could some of Danny’s nearest and dearest make the drive up to Boston to visit their relative? Wahlberg played coy when asked if any other Blue Bloods stars will appear on Boston Blue, on which he is also an executive producer. But he did say that there would be “updates” on what’s happened to the Reagan family since the Blue Bloods series finale. 

“I know what the fans want,” he added. “And I will not let them down.” 

Boston Blue premieres in fall 2025 on CBS.
