Squid Game Season 2 left fans stunned after Gi-hun (Lee Jung-jae) returned to the games and put his life on the line to end the fatal competition once and for all. Now, the hit Netflix series is finally returning with its third and final installment this week, which means fans will finally get some much-needed closure on the Netflix series that has had viewers on the edges of their seats since it debuted in 2021.

Squid Game Season 3 will pick up after Gi-hun’s rebellion against the game architects. Joined by his best friend Jung-bae (Lee Seo-hwan) and flanked by several fellow players who fought to hold off the pink guards, Gi-hun attempted to fight his way to the Front Man (Lee Byung-hun) to put an end to the Squid Game. But Gi-hun failed to realize that the Front Man already infiltrated the games as Player 001, or Young-il, and has been earning his trust the entire time.

To worsen the betrayal, the Front Man killed Jung-bae in the Season 2 finale, dealing the final blow to Gi-hun’s once-optimistic outlook on life. Could this also be the death of Gi-hun’s plan to end the Squid Game?

Jung-jae said he doesn’t believe Gi-hun is aware of Young-il’s secret identity just yet but will still be fundamentally changed by the loss in Season 3. “I don’t think he knows yet. I think he’s blaming himself for everything that happened,” he told Netflix’s Tudum.

Director and writer Hwang Dong-hyuk also teased what fans should expect in the highly anticipated conclusion of Squid Game. Gi-hun will be pushed to new limits with everything he’s gone through because of the games. “Is he still going to believe that he will be able to persuade others and leave together or put an end to the game?” Hwang said, per Tudum. “Or will he give in and become a completely different person? Someone just like the Front Man, who thinks, ‘What can I change?’”

“Gi-hun is overwhelmed with a profound sense of defeat and remorse,” he said. “In Season 3, we’ll see how Gi-hun returns to the game arena and faces the challenges ahead.”

How many episodes are in Squid Game Season 3?

Squid Game Season 3 will have six episodes, all of which will be available to stream on Netflix beginning Friday, June 27.

Squid Game Season 3 will mark the conclusion of the Korean series.

But the Squid Game franchise is expanding with an English-language spinoff series being developed by David Fincher, in addition to the reality series Squid Game: The Challenge.
