Nearly a year has passed since I felt let down by a Netflix show. The Night Agent stirred excitement among Brittany Snow enthusiasts, myself included, with the promise of her joining Season 2, only to feature her for a scant 12 minutes. Yes, just TWELVE!
As the first anniversary of my article, “I’m Still Not Over The Night Agent Season 2’s Outrageous Lack Of Brittany Snow,” approaches, we find ourselves here again, this time to lament the disappointment brought by Emily in Paris Season 5. Bryan Greenberg’s role was far too limited for my taste.
Having been a dedicated fan of One Tree Hill and harboring a soft spot for Greenberg’s character, Jake Jagielski, I was thrilled to hear he’d be joining the Parisian adventure in Season 5. The 47-year-old actor and musician boasts an impressive career, with appearances in numerous films and series such as The Perfect Score, October Road, Bride Wars, Friends with Benefits, How to Make It in America, The Mindy Project, and most recently, Suits LA. What a coup for the series! And discovering his character was also named Jake was just the cherry on top!
With Emily (played by Lily Collins) having ended Season 4 in a relationship with Marcello (Eugenio Franceschini) in Rome, and Mindy (Ashley Park) breaking up with Nico (Paul Forman), I initially speculated that Greenberg might play a new romantic interest for Mindy. Alas, he portrayed another American in Paris, working as a consular officer at the U.S. Embassy. So, how do he and Emily cross paths? Naturally, at an American pub during a Friends trivia night!
In Episode 6, an emotionally drained Emily finds herself at the nostalgic bar, ordering a Pabst Blue Ribbon as she longs for the taste of watery beer. Jake strikes up a conversation, and upon learning she’s on her own, invites her to join his team, Team Marcel, where they dominate the trivia night. Unsurprisingly, Emily is a huge Friends fan — and conveniently, so is Jake! (He claims his sister always had control of the remote.) After celebrating their victory with another round, Jake walks Emily out, gifts her the winning Friends t-shirt, and extends an invitation to a Fourth of July bash at the Embassy.
In just two scenes, Greenberg’s endearing personality was on full and effortlessly lit a spark between Jake and Emily. We don’t need to know Jake long to sense he’s a kind, romantic man who respects her. He’s easy on the eyes and fashionable in the sense that he wore a Jess Mariano-esque jacket. He has a sense of humor, a great job, and a killer smile. (Not serial killer, just gorgeous.) And when he and Emily parted ways that first night, he looked back at her in admiration. I repeat, he looked back! Swoon city!
When Emily takes Jake up on his offer to party at the Embassy, you best believe that man only gets hotter. He has flirty banter! He appreciates a good hot dog! And he know how to plan a rom-com worthy date. He takes Emily to a room full of American junk food and whimsical memorabilia! He shamelessly tries on goofy sunglasses! He sits on the floor and eats Reese’s Puffs while staring deep into her eyes, for goodness sake! And I can’t stress this enough, the character wouldn’t have stolen viewers’ hearts so swiftly without Greenberg’s signature charm.
During Fourth of July fireworks, Jake quickly clocks that Emily is emotional and the two connect over feeling homesick. When Jake notes it can be hard to find genuine connections in Paris, Emily replies, “It can be, but I think I found one.” And in that moment, I — like Jake — thought a kiss was imminent. Instead, Emily declines, and says that although he’s great, she’s “kiss proof” at that moment. Rather than getting upset and letting his bruised ego control his reaction, Jake recovers quickly and continues comforting Emily as friends. A stand up man with serious crush potential, indeed, which makes their poor timing a pity.
When chatting with creator Darren Star about Greenberg/Jake being a brief blip in the Emily in Paris universe, the creator explained, “I think Emily has a lot of guys to juggle at the moment, but I loved [Bryan Greenberg] and I love the episode.”
As much as it pains me to admit, Star does have a point. Hot French chef Garbiel (Lucas Bravo)! British babe Alfie (Lucien Laviscount)! Italian stallion Marcello (Eugenio Franceschini)! OH MY! While Emily is technically single when she met Jake, she isn’t recovered from her latest breakup, she’s homesick, and she’s reeling from her fallout with Mindy. So Jake and their American hangs are exactly what she needs to heal.
After six seasons of Emily in Paris I get that it’s low-key sacrilegious to ship Emily with a fellow American, but I did selfishly hope Jake would be in the picture for more than one episode. And at the very least, I wanted to spend longer than *checks timer* TEN MINUTES with him! (Help! It’s worse than The Night Agent!)
Star did confirm, “It doesn’t mean that we won’t see [Jake] again if we have the opportunity.” So here’s hoping The One Where Jake Returns becomes a reality one day. (And lets him sing with Mindy!)
Emily in Paris Season 5 is now streaming on Netflix.
