Michael Douglas has confirmed a long-standing Hollywood rumor: he and Kathleen Turner had a private romance while filming the 1984 adventure comedy Romancing the Stone.
In his new memoir, One Helluva Ride, 82-year-old Douglas reveals that he became involved with Turner while separated from his then-wife, Diandra Douglas. He says he asked Turner for permission before making the relationship public.
Douglas writes that Turner was “smart, funny, and sexy,” adding that her deep, sultry voice quickly became one of her defining traits. He says he was immediately drawn to her and that the attraction was mutual (via People).
The pair’s on-screen chemistry was so convincing that audiences spent years assuming they were romantically involved during production. According to Douglas, those suspicions were accurate, even though he and Turner repeatedly “denied” having sex while promoting Romancing the Stone, its sequel The Jewel of the Nile, and later projects. They also reunited as a former married couple on the Netflix sitcom The Kominsky Method.
Douglas says the romance was brief, but the bond between them was sincere.
“It wasn’t a fly-by-night affair,” Douglas explains in his memoir. He says their relationship developed naturally as they worked closely under intense pressure, respected one another, and recognized their mutual attraction. The affair ended after his wife visited the set with their son. Douglas felt guilty, while Turner did not want to disrupt his marriage. They decided to stop seeing each other romantically but remained on friendly terms.

Why the ‘Romancing the Stone’ stars were so compatible
From an astrological perspective, Douglas and Turner’s connection may also seem unsurprising. Douglas is a Libra, born September 25, while Turner is a Gemini, born June 19. Both are Air signs, traditionally associated with mental energy, communication, sociability, and charm.
Libra-Gemini pairings are often described as lively and conversational, with strong romantic and sexual compatibility. Both signs also value independence, which may have helped Douglas and Turner part amicably. Their direct communication could have made it easier to end the relationship and later work together again as colleagues.
Douglas also remembers reconnecting with Turner while developing the screenplay for The Jewel of the Nile.
As they sat opposite each other revising the film, Douglas says it felt as though they were repairing their personal relationship as well. They exchanged pages, debated dialogue, laughed over scenes, and imagined their characters’ many clashes. By the end of the process, he writes, it was reassuring to know they were once again on solid ground.
