In most situations, discovering you’re destined to be the next murder victim would be a nightmare. However, if you’re an actor with a role in “Only Murders in the Building,” it might just be the highlight of your career.

**Warning: Spoilers ahead for the Season 5 finale of “Only Murders in the Building,” now available on Hulu**

John Hoffman, the show’s co-creator, recently sat down with DECIDER to discuss the latest episode, “The House Always.” During the conversation, he revealed how he broke the news to Tina Fey, an original cast member, that her character, Cinda Canning, would be the next in line to fall victim in the series’ ongoing murder mystery set at the Arconia. Cinda, whose podcasting prowess inspired Oliver (Martin Short), Charles (Steve Martin), and Mabel (Selena Gomez) to launch their own podcast, finds herself entangled in the deadly drama.

Hoffman recounted the moment he informed Fey of her character’s fate. “I was on my way to scout a location, sitting in a van, when I knew I had to tell her,” he recalled. “She took a deep breath and said, ‘I don’t know how I’m not going to be able to tell my daughters.’” Despite the shocking twist, Fey was thrilled, as Hoffman noted. “She’s as much a fan of the show as she is part of the ‘Only Murders’ family. Her excitement was palpable.”

The season finale’s closing moments, set three months after the resolution of the Arconia’s doorman Lester’s (Teddy Coluca) murder, see Charles, Mabel, and Oliver tuning into Cinda Canning’s latest podcast. As they listen, the scene cuts to a red-haired woman running through New York’s streets, eventually collapsing near the Arconia’s entrance. Meanwhile, Fey’s voiceover narrates how a mystery led her character to London, intersecting with a red-haired woman embroiled in a royal scandal. This intriguing setup promises more twists and turns in the show’s next chapter.

In the next scene, as the podcasting bunch are headed out, they stumble upon the woman who uses her seemingly last reserve of energy to put her hand through a slit in the gate of the Arconia, giving them the right to initiate an investigation as her body is now “in the building,” more or less. Just before cutting to the credits, however, the mysterious woman turns over and is revealed to be none other than Cinda, with blood dripping from the sides of her mouth. Long story short: the gang is headed to London to get to the bottom of what happened and Cinda will be at the heart of the season. Great for Fey, terrible for her daughters who watch with her.

“When we sat down — we were together over the summer for a little bit and her daughter was there — we had to sneak away from Penelope and have private talks about plans and what Season 6 looks like and what other things could happen and all of that,” Hoffman explained. “It’s been a blast.”

Even with the secrets and the hiding, Hoffman admitted that there is something special about each person who gets picked to be a murder victim in the show. In early October, DECIDER talked with Michael Cyril Creighton who plays Howard and he said that while he never wants to be killed in the show, there’s an element to it of the writers and producers trusting you to lead a season on your back a la Jane Lynch as Sazz in Season 4, Coluca as Lester in Season 5, and Paul Rudd in, well, a few seasons now. “Dying on our show is sort of fantastic, because then you get a whole other season where we learn even more about you,” Creighton joked.

In response, Hoffman said that he completely agrees and that while it’s always sad to lose a member of the ever-growing Only Murders clan, he’s happy to give each actor a season of backstory as a parting gift. “It is a bit of an honor, I guess,” he said with a laugh, adding that no one is safe in this building and beyond. “Everybody’s on the table. If I have to be ruthless, I have to be ruthless.”

As for the idea that the woman seen in the final moments of Season 5 might not be Cinda Canning, but rather her long lost twin sister (Parent Trap moment, anyone?!), the series co-creator laughed but refused to comment on the direction the story will go in for Season 6.

I can neither confirm nor deny. I will only say what you see at the end of Season 5 is clearly Cinda Canning,” Hoffman said with a smirk.
