While Smoke‘s Season 1 finale concluded with a clear sense of closure, viewers will also be left craving more time with Gudsen (Taron Egerton) and Calderone (Jurnee Smollett), as well as more answers to lingering burning questions.

So does Smoke Episode 9, “Mirror Mirror,” aka the Season 1 finale mark the end of the story? Or does Dennis Lehane’s fiery Apple TV+ series have a longer burn time?

When chatting with Lehane about Smoke Season 1 and the action-packed finale ahead of the show’s premiere, we made sure to ask about his vision for the show, and whether it was created as a limited series or has potential to return with new episodes.

So will there be a Season 2 of Smoke on Apple TV+? Has Apple canceled or renewed Smoke yet? And if Smoke returns for Season 2, what could the show look like?

We’ve got answers below, along with comments from Lehane himself about his original vision for Smoke and how long he envisions the series running.

Will There Be A Season 2 of Smoke on Apple TV+? Creator Dennis Lehane Weighs In On Smoke Season 2:

As of Smoke‘s finale premiere date, August 15, Apple TV+ had yet to official renew or cancel the series. But that’s not to say Smoke Season 2 isn’t a possibility. The show has seemed like a bit of a slow-burn compared to other hit Apple TV+ series, and despite a 72% Tomatometer score from critics, Rotten Tomatoes’ audience rating sits at a rather low 50%. That said, with Lehane’s successful career (including Apple TV+’s Black Bird) and the show’s stacked cast, there’s definite potential for a second season — especially since Lehane has more story to tell.

“We’ve planned a whole Season 2, now we’ve just got to find out if we get it. We’re ready to go for you,” Lehane told Decider. “We always saw the show as three seasons. And just so you know, I always have to know where I’m ultimately going. I don’t know how I’m getting there, but I know where I am going. So I know where the show’s going.”

Smoke Ending Explained: Did Gudsen Or Calderone Go Down For Their Crimes?

Looking for a detailed recap of Smoke‘s Season 1 finale? Decider’s got you covered! As for major takeaways, after a fiery face-off in the forest, Calderone cuffed Gudsen, took him into the station, and the glove she planted at Burk’s house tested positive for his DNA. During an intense interrogation, Calderone laid out key evidence to support their theories that Gudsen is a firebug, and after searching Gudsen’s car, Esposito found the D&C arsonist’s disguise, another smoking gun. After a season of denying any wrongdoing, Gudsen is finally forced to confront his true identity. In the final scene, Calderone flashes a victory smile, but is she out of the clear yet?

What Could Smoke Season 2 Look Like?

Should Smoke Season 2 get green-lit, the series would likely explore the aftermath of the finale, a potential Gudsen trial, and the fallout that comes from looking into his crimes. There’s potential for Harvey’s financial crimes, which Gudsen knows about, to come to light. And there’s definitely a chance that Calderone’s frame job starts to unravel — especially considering her brother suspiciously downloaded the security videos of her at Burk’s house before deleting them. Ultimately, we’ll have to see what Lehane has in store for the story. Until then, stay tuned for Smoke Season 2 updates.

Smoke is now streaming on Apple TV+.
