After 14 seasons on the streets of New York, Blue Bloods turned in its badge, ending in 2024, and will not becoming out of retirement. After over a decade of fighting crime, Tom Selleck‘s iconic series ended in December, breaking fans’ hearts.

However, Blue Bloods buffs were relieved after nearly two months of despair when CBS Entertainment announced on Feb. 18 a straight-to-series order for Boston Blue, currently a working title. The Blue Bloods spinoff, which is considered to be an expansion of its predecessor, will star Donnie Wahlberg returning as Danny Reagan. Reagan will work alongside Detective Lena Peters, the eldest daughter of a prominent law enforcement family. The role has not yet been cast.

While the actual location for filming has yet to be announced, regardless of the film site, Wahlberg, a Boston legend, will feel at home protecting his fictitious city streets.

ScreenRant reported that Blue Bloods was canceled due to its high production costs. These expenses were driven by the large ensemble cast that has been part of the show’s dynamic since its premiere in 2010.

In a separate report, ScreenRant also shared that the Blue Bloods family was not ready to let go of the show, with Selleck and Wahlberg being its biggest advocates for keeping the cameras rolling. Wahlberg began filming the spinoff in mid-2024. The CBS show S.W.A.T. has since filled Blue Bloods’ time slot.

Fans were given limited information regarding a release date, but CBS Entertainment is planning for a 2025-2026 release.

The finale of Blue Bloods had almost 6.7 million viewers, per Variety. As the show ended, the Reagans sat at the family dinner table, wrapping up light-heartedly and emphasizing the family theme one final time.

However, this sweet ending gives little insight into where the spinoff is headed. The spinoff is likely to follow the family drama theme with one of the limited details mentioning that Danny’s new partner is the daughter of a distinguished law enforcement family.

For fans, this little information will not suffice, but as always, they should expect a hot-headed Danny fighting crime—who, for some reason, seems a little more in his element on the streets of Boston.

And if they’re lucky, fans will get at least another 14 seasons so the Blue Bloods legacy can live on.
