The YWCA has once again teamed up with the Ulta Beauty Charitable Foundation to host this year’s “Pretty Empowered” events, designed to boost confidence and curiosity among young girls. These gatherings welcomed hundreds for a day dedicated to exploring real-world opportunities and self-discovery.
Initially launched in Chicago in 2022, the program has expanded nationwide with various YWCA locations hosting their own adaptations. On October 18, over 730 girls, mostly aged 9 to 14, engaged in a day filled with new experiences, networking opportunities, and insights into potential career paths. This year’s theme, “Beauty in Belonging,” guided participants through sessions focused on wellness, STEM, and leadership.
Backed by the Ulta Beauty Charitable Foundation, local YWCA chapters enlisted experts to demystify different facets of the beauty industry. Some attendees explored the realm of cosmetic science, while others delved into supply chain logistics and store operations. The program also highlighted STEM careers, an important focus given that women represent only 26% of the STEM workforce, as reported by the U.S. Department of Labor.
This initiative extends beyond career introductions; it aims to influence how girls perceive themselves, carry themselves into rooms, lead, and envision their futures.
Margaret Mitchell, CEO of YWCA USA, emphasized the program’s impact in an interview with Black Enterprise, stating, “By centering wellness and STEM education, we’re helping young women see themselves as leaders, innovators, and changemakers. We’re proud to partner with Ulta Beauty Charitable Foundation to create spaces where belonging and empowerment go hand in hand.”
Events took place at eight different YWCA locations, from Atlanta to Greater Los Angeles to several cities in Florida. Some groups did yoga and wellness sessions; others jumped into hands-on science activities or leadership discussions. Each local chapter ran its own schedule, but all carried the same message, girls deserve room to grow and access to people who believe in what they’re capable of.
“Ulta Beauty is proud to continue our partnership with YWCA through Pretty Empowered, an initiative that reflects our shared commitment to helping young women realize their full potential,” said Amiee Bayer Thomas, chief retail officer at Ulta Beauty and a YWCA Metropolitan Chicago board member.
“By creating spaces that foster confidence, belonging, and curiosity, we’re helping young women explore new possibilities – in beauty, in STEM, and beyond – and empowering the next generation of leaders.”
