Zack Snyder Revealed His Secret Contribution to ‘Wonder Woman’

Wonder Woman made her on-screen debut in Batman v Superman, where the character’s actor Gal Gadot even surprised Zack Snyder with her performance. Patty Jenkins would later inherit the character for her own Wonder Woman movie. And although she had considerable control over the project, there was one small contribution Snyder made for the movie that added an extra layer to the superhero.

Although shooting Wonder Woman could sometimes be frustrating for Jenkins, it seemed to be a rewarding experience in the end. The first movie was both a critical and commercial success thanks in large part to the cast and storytelling. Jenkins credited Snyder for casting Gal Gadot as the DC superhero, a decision Jenkins doubted she would’ve made herself.

“Frankly, I think they did a better job than I could have because I don’t know that I would have scoured the earth as hard to find her. I don’t know that I would’ve looked internationally,” Jenkins once said in an interview with Playboy (via CBR). “I would have just looked for an American girl. The fact that they found Gal and chose her is a magical gift to me. They’re incredibly intelligent people and they were looking for all the same things I would have looked for—all the values that Wonder Woman stands for exuding from someone in an honest way, and boy did they find it. She’s the greatest.”

But apart from just influencing the film’s casting, Snyder had a much smaller impact on the 2017 feature. In an interview with Wired, Snyder explained that he wrote a piece of dialogue into the movie that helped maintain his original vision for Wonder Woman.

“When I started it, I wanted a Wonder Woman that was not necessarily naive,” he said, “Not necessarily, like, a virgin. Actually, there’s one line in the Wonder Woman movie that I originally wrote. When they’re on the boat and talking about, like, the treatises on sexual pleasure, she says [to Steve Trevor], ‘You wouldn’t like it because it concludes that men, though important for reproduction, are not necessary for pleasure.’ That was my contribution.”

Zack Snyder never got to do this ‘Wonder Woman’ movie

Fans got to see how Gadot’s Wonder Woman operated in two completely different period pieces and settings. The original Wonder Woman was set in 1918. Then audiences saw how the superhero tackled the 80s in her second solo film Wonder Woman 1984. But there was another period piece Snyder was interested in doing with the character.

Audiences caught a glimpse of this unmade Wonder Woman project in Batman v Superman. In the film, a photo was discovered featuring the Amazon princess posing alongside a diverse group of warriors. Since the character was immortal, it was unclear how old the superhero was. But her immortality allowed for some interesting storytelling Snyder wanted to explore, which inspired the famous photo.

“The idea of that was an early riff we were doing,” Snyder told Empire. “Once Wonder Woman left the island in search of Ares, what happened to her in her different incarnations? My idea for it was that she would travel around the world looking for Ares and she would go to every place where there was conflict.”

The project also would’ve seen Princess Diana involved with other love interests aside from just Steve Trevor.

“On those battlefields she found these lovers, warriors, and they would age out because she is immortal,” he added. “They would be her lover for ten years or they might die in battle, and it was probably sad for a lot of the guys because they would see her starting to be nice to the next young soldier and be like, ‘Oh, I’m being replaced.’ But all the guys that she had with her were those loyal warriors she found on the battlefields all over the world.”

The story didn’t seem to make it past the idea stage. But it seemed a lot of that backstory might’ve informed Wonder Woman’s character.

“It was never a screenplay,” he remembered. “But we talked about it so much that it kind of had its own life.”
