Since taking office on January 7, 2023, American politician Kevin Owen McCarthy has served as the House of Representatives 55th speaker.
He was a Republican who served as Speakers John Boehner and Paul Ryan’s House Majority Leader from 2014 to 2019 and House Minority Leader from 2019 to 2023.
McCarthy, currently serving his seventh term in the House, previously represented California’s 22nd congressional district from 2007 to 2013, 23rd congressional district from 2013 to 2023, and 20th congressional district since 2023.
In California’s Bakersfield, McCarthy was born. He was a firefighter and a student at California State University, Bakersfield.
McCarthy formerly served as the president of the Young Republican National Federation and the California Young Republicans.

McCarthy has lived in Kern County for four generations. His paternal grandfather was Irish, while his maternal grandfather was an immigrant from Italy.
Given that his parents were Democrats, McCarthy is the first Republican in his direct family.
McCarthy, then 19 years old, started his first Company in 1984, selling sandwiches from the back of his uncle’s yogurt store on Stine Road.
He earned a Bachelor of Science in marketing from California State University, Bakersfield, in 1989 and a Master of Business Administration from the same institution in 1994.
He served as a seasonal fireman for the Kern County Fire Department during his time in college.

Judy, McCarthy’s wife, and the couple’s two kids. They have lived in Bakersfield their entire lives. He and his family are Southern Baptists who identify as Baptists.
He served on the Community Action Partnership of Kern’s board in the past. McCarthy was charged with having an affair with Congresswoman Renee Ellmers in October 2015.
Just before the allegations were made public, he abruptly withdrew from consideration for Speaker of the House.
Days earlier, Cathy McMorris Rodgers received a letter from Representative Walter B. Jones Jr. requesting that any contenders for a leadership post with “misdeeds” drop out of the running.
McCarthy and Ellmers have refuted the accusations.
William “Bill” Wages of McCarthy’s brother-in-business, law’s Vortex Construction, won $7.6 million in no-bid and other prime federal contracts since 2000, according to an investigation published in October 2018.
Most of the work was for building initiatives at the Naval Air Weapons Station China Lake near McCarthy’s Bakersfield neighborhood and the Naval Air Station Lemoore in Kings County, California.
