Darrion Trammell has an older brother named Michael Adams, per a story from ABC7. His parents told the outlet that Darrion’s passion for basketball began when he was a young boy and used to watch Michael play. Michael said that “Coming up around high school it was a lot of, ‘You’re not this, you’re not that, you’re not big enough,’” about Darrion. “So, anytime he’s faced with a challenge, and he hears someone say you can’t do the challenge, he’s always determined to go out and prove that person wrong.”
Darrion, however, appears to have had a second, nameless sibling who also died. The basketball player reportedly broke down in tears after making the game-winning shot that guaranteed his team a position in the Final Four, according to On3.
Darrion shared, “It’s all about believing in yourself. I feel like I put in the work. I had nothing to be nervous about. It’s just a game. I’m doing this for my family back home, my grandpa, my brother who I lost. I’m just doing it for them.”
Darrion Trammell, a native of Marin City and a graduate of St. Ignatius, is a major reason why San Diego State has made history by reaching the men’s NCAA Final Four for the first time ever.
Trammell’s family was overwhelmed with joy and pride after Sunday’s game against Creighton. “It’s too many emotions. Hard to explain right now. It’s just overwhelming,” Trammell’s dad, Damien Trammell, told ABC7 News while fighting back tears.
Trammell’s mother, Diema Adams Parham, described the moment she ran up to her son after the game. “Oh my God, I hugged him so tight,” Diema said. “I kissed his face a thousand times. I was like, ‘You did it! You’re here! His tears were on his cheeks. It was just a moment where I felt like you made it, you did it,” Diema exclaimed.
Marin City is where Darrion was born and bred. “He’s this itty bitty, pint-sized kid shooting threes and people are like, ‘who is this kid shooting threes?’ It’s Darrion Trammell,” his mother recalled.
Before playing point guard for SDSU, Darrion played at St. Ignatius in San Francisco, San Francisco City College, and Seattle University. His hard work ethic, which included the numerous early mornings and late nights he spent honing his basketball skills at the leisure center in Marin City, was credited by his family with his victory on Sunday.
