Richard Paul Astley is an English singer, songwriter, and radio host who was born on February 6, 1966. He has been involved in the music industry for a number of years. With numerous successes in the 1980s, including “Never Gonna Give You Up,” “Together Forever,” and “Whenever You Need Somebody,” he attained international renown. After a 6-year break, he made a full-time comeback to music in the 2000s. Astley has on occasion worked as a radio DJ and a podcaster outside of his music career.
When the music video for Astley’s song “Never Gonna Give You Up” became a crucial part of the Rickrolling meme in 2007, the meme’s popularity helped Astley become an Internet sensation and revive his performance career.
After touring with Peter Kay, Astley released the single “Lights Out” in 2010. To commemorate his 50th birthday, he released his album 50 six years later, which debuted at No. 1 in the UK. Both his greatest hits collection The Best of Me and his most recent studio album Beautiful Life were published in 2018. His home studio in Surrey is where he recorded his most recent CDs.
When Astley took a little break from performing, he had sold about 40 million records worldwide. At the MTV Europe Music Awards 2008, Astley was chosen as “Best Act Ever” by online voters one year after the Rickrolling craze debuted.

Astley was born on 6 February 1966 in Newton-le-Willows in Lancashire, the fourth child of his family. His parents divorced when he was five and Astley was brought up by his father Horace Astley. Astley remained in very close contact with his mother Cynthia Astley, who lived a few streets away from his father. After finding out that his father was the one who kicked his mother out of the house, Astley distanced himself from his father. When he was 10 years old, Astley began singing in a local church choir, which began his love of music.

Astley has been married to film producer Lene Bausager since 2003. They have a daughter Emilie born in 1992 before her parents got married. She has a master’s degree in fine art and is a garden designer. Astley met Bausager when she was working as a promoter with RCA in 1987, and she is now a film producer. He and his wife live in the Surrey town of Molesey, and his daughter lives in Denmark. He maintains a home recording studio and has a collection of guitars.
