As men reach their 40s, 50s, and later years, they encounter a common challenge: sarcopenia, which is the natural decline of lean muscle. This tends to occur alongside a reduction in physical activity levels, meaning that muscles are not being used in ways that are vital for maintaining their strength. Without engaging in regular resistance exercises, lean muscle mass decreases by about 3% to 8% each decade after 30. Consequently, it’s crucial to optimize your fitness routine to safeguard your muscle mass, and we’ve identified nine essential exercises to help you achieve this.

“Men start to experience rapid muscle loss after 50, and the only effective way to counteract this is through strength training. While cardio benefits heart health, it doesn’t preserve muscle strength,” says Denise Chakoian, a Rhode Island certified fitness trainer and owner of Core Cycle and Fitness LaGree. “Engaging in weight lifting or bodyweight exercises makes everyday activities more manageable and reduces the risk of falls or injuries. Maintaining muscle mass also boosts calorie burning, which aids in weight management and overall health.”

Although your schedule may be fast-paced and demanding, it’s critical to maintain an active, healthy lifestyle.

“Physical fitness is important not just for aesthetics but for the numerous proven benefits it offers both physically and mentally,” states Daisean Brewster (AAAI/ISMA certified) from Blink Fitness.

Prioritizing resistance training—specifically, compound exercises that engage more than one muscle group at a time—is key as you age.

“Resistance training stimulates the production of growth hormone and testosterone, promoting muscle growth and preventing muscle loss,” Brewster tells us. “Additionally, resistance training enhances bone density, improves joint health, and increases metabolism, resulting in a more efficient energy expenditure.”

9 Essential Exercises for Men To Prevent Muscle Loss After 50

Below, experts break down the most essential exercises every man should do after 50 to keep their body fit and strong.

“These exercises should be done two to three times per week, with a rest day in between to let muscles recover,” Chakoian says. “Consistency matters more than intensity at first, so sticking to the routine is key. Most men notice progress in strength, energy, and muscle tone within six to eight weeks.”
