Dangers Of Muscle-Building Drugs. Urgent warning over ‘dangerous’ muscle-building drugs being sold illegally

Risky medications for developing muscle are being sold illegally in Britain, the BBC has discovered.

The performance-enhancing drugs, which can be purchased for as little as 40p a pill, were discovered by undercover reporters in stores that offered bodybuilding supplements. Retailers were observed advising customers on how to use the medications.

SARMs, or selective androgen receptor modulators, have also been discovered on internet marketplaces like eBay and Depop.

They function similarly to steroids but have not undergone thorough human safety testing, are not recommended by doctors, and are forbidden by the World Anti-Doping Agency.

SARMs, however, have been found to interfere with hormone levels, raise the risk of heart attacks, strokes, and liver issues. Even some people have connected them to infertility.

S elective androgen receptor modulators, or SARMs — sold in jars of up to 120 pills — have been popular in the underground bodybuilding scene for several years. One online advice page on the drugs, called SarmGuide, posts dramatic transformations of men claiming to have taken them. It estimated that the man, who wasn't identified, gained about 5lbs of muscle 'mostly in the arms and shoulders'

Men who claim to have taken the medications are shown in dramatic transformations on the SarmGuide website, which offers advise on the subject. It was believed that the unnamed man acquired roughly 5 pounds of muscle, especially in his shoulders and arms.

Dangers Of Muscle-Building Drugs

According to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, some bodybuilding products may unlawfully contain steroids or compounds that are similar to steroids and are linked to potentially dangerous health hazards, such as liver damage, which can be fatal. The FDA has received hundreds of reports of adverse events, some of which contain evidence of severe liver damage.

In addition to liver injury, anabolic steroids have been associated with serious reactions such as:

  • Severe acne
  • Hair loss
  • Altered mood
  • Irritability
  • Increased aggression
  • Depression

They have also been associated with life-threatening reactions such as:

  • Kidney damage
  • Heart attack
  • Stroke
  • Pulmonary embolism (blood clots in the lungs)
  • Deep vein thrombosis (blood clots that occur in veins deep in the body)

These muscle-building supplements are marketed as hormone supplements or as anabolic steroid substitutes for gaining strength and muscle growth. Many of these products, while purporting to include active chemicals that might increase or decrease androgen, estrogen, or progestin-like actions in the body, actually contain anabolic steroids or steroid-like compounds, which are artificial hormones linked to testosterone.

Bodybuilding Products May Contain Steroids

Many of these bodybuilding goods were discovered by the FDA to be marketed as “dietary supplements” both online and in physical locations. Many of these goods are actually illegally advertised, unapproved novel medications that are not dietary supplements at all; they include unknown or unverified substances. Before the companies started their marketing campaigns, the agency did not examine the products for quality, safety, or efficacy.

These potentially dangerous, occasionally covert substances are still a problem in goods intended for bodybuilding.

By taking advantage of a readily available market to sell their goods to customers, these corporations are breaking the law.

In the end, ingesting harmful substances from products that are advertised as having magical benefits or making bogus claims puts consumers who may not grasp the hazards in danger.

Some people who use bodybuilding supplements engage in “stacking,” which is the practice of using two or more bodybuilding supplements simultaneously (including stimulants or items that falsely claim to protect the liver) to improve outcomes or “gains.” Customers may be more likely to experience significant and potentially fatal responses as a result of these combinations.

What to Do

The FDA advises that you stop using any bodybuilding products that contain steroid-like chemicals or claim to include steroids right away due to the potentially dangerous health dangers involved.
If you’re taking any bodybuilding products that claim to contain steroids or steroid-like substances, the FDA recommends that you immediately stop taking them because of the potentially serious health risks associated with using them.
