Britney Spears’s father Jamie Spears, 71, was severely ill and was hospitalized with a bacterial infection on his right leg that landed him in the hospital for weeks.
Due to the illness, he had 5 unsuccessful surgeries to contain the infection, and doctors decided the only way to proceed was to amputate his leg.’

According to a statement from Britney’s team obtained by PEOPLE at the time, Jamie underwent emergency surgery and was hospitalized for 28 days.

The news comes after TMZ reported in August that Jamie was initially hospitalized “several months ago” to deal with complications that arose from a knee replacement he underwent in the mid-2000s.

In early October this year, he was “seriously ill” and had been in and out of hospitals, including a facility for infectious disease patients.

Sources told the outlet at the time that the Spears patriarch had “lost more than 25 pounds” and looked “extremely thin” while “in and out” of medical care.

The embattled father and former conservator of Britney Spears was photographed at a warehouse in Kentwood, La., on Tuesday, receiving help moving from the passenger’s seat of a car into a wheelchair.

The 71-year-old’s right leg was partially amputated in November, four inches above his knee.
