Revitalize Your Core: Top 5 Home Exercises to Flatten Your Lower Belly Post-60

Sculpt and tighten your lower belly with these easy exercises you can do at home.

Many fitness enthusiasts striving for a sleek, toned core initially rely on classic abdominal exercises such as sit-ups. While these exercises can certainly enhance your routine, they aren’t the fastest path to visible results.

Your first priority should be to create a calorie deficit, meaning you expend more calories than you take in. Once you have that in place, it’s time to integrate the most effective exercises into your routine. We’re here to guide you through this process.

Bruno Pontes, a certified Personal Trainer by ACSM and AFAA at Muscle Booster, reveals five dynamic home exercises to efficiently flatten and define your lower belly, outpacing the results from sit-ups after age 60.

“Sit-ups aren’t necessarily harmful, and when executed properly, they serve as effective ab exercises. However, consistently flexing the spine under pressure or doing a high volume can strain the lower back,” Pontes cautions. “This doesn’t suggest you should eliminate sit-ups from your workout; rather, it underlines the importance of variety. Combining sit-ups with core-stabilizing exercises like planks, dead bugs, and loaded carries can provide a comprehensive approach to building core strength.”

Dead Bug

“The dead bug is a great starting point for functional core training because it teaches you to keep your core stable while moving your arms and legs independently,” Pontes says.

  1. Lie flat on your back with your arms extended toward the ceiling and knees lifted in a tabletop position.
  2. Press your back into the mat and brace your core.
  3. Lower one arm and the opposite leg.
  4. Return to the start position.
  5. Repeat on the other side and continue to alternate.

Suitcase Deadlift

“The suitcase deadlift is a particularly functional movement because it closely resembles something we do in everyday life, picking up and carrying a heavy object,” Pontes notes.

  1. Start by standing tall and holding a dumbbell, kettlebell, or water jug in one hand.
  2. Push your hips back, bend your knees, and lower the weight toward the ground.
  3. Press through your feet to rise back up, making sure the weight stays close to your body.
  4. Repeat on the other side.

Bear Crawl

“The bear crawl challenges your core while your body is moving, so it’s a good example of functional strength rather than simply holding a static position,” Pontes explains. “This is a great exercise for developing stability throughout your body as multiple muscle groups work together to keep your body stable. It also helps build your coordination and shoulder strength while challenging you to stay balanced.”

  1. Begin in a quadruped position with your knees under your hips and your hands under your shoulders.
  2. Lift your knees a few inches off the ground while keeping your core engaged and your back flat.
  3. Move your left hand and right foot forward.
  4. Then, move your right hand and left foot forward.
  5. Continue to “crawl,” maintaining steady breath and a tight core throughout.

Leg Drops

“Leg drops are great for strengthening lower abs because they specifically target the lower portion of the rectus abdominis. The controlled movement required help improve control and endurance,” Pontes explains.

  1. Begin by lying flat on your back.
  2. Lift your legs up to 90 degrees.
  3. Slowly lower both legs toward the ground without arching your back.
  4. Keep your core engaged as you lift them back up to 90 degrees.

“Combining cardio and core work, mountain climbers engage your lower abs while boosting your overall fitness,” Pontes says.

  1. Begin in a high plank with your hands under your shoulders and your body straight.
  2. Drive one knee at a time in toward your chest; switch quickly as if you are
    “running” in place.
  3. Maintain a braced core and avoid bouncing your hips.
