Shrink Belly Fat with These 5 Standing Exercises for Over-60s—No Gym Required

Standing workouts effectively engage the core, influencing overall fitness in a substantial way.

If you find yourself noticing a little extra weight around your midsection, you're definitely not alone. Belly fat is notoriously difficult to tackle and brings with it significant health risks such as type 2 diabetes, heart disease, and even cancer. Incorporating the right exercises into your fitness routine is crucial for addressing this issue. In pursuit of effective methods, we consulted with Jacob Siwicki, the founder and head coach of Siwicki Fitness. A Dartmouth economics graduate and former football player, Siwicki is also a certified NCSF and AFAA expert, previously ranked among the top 1% globally as an Equinox group fitness instructor, and recognized as FOX 5 DC's fitness guru. In 2021, he earned the title of D.C.'s #1 personal trainer. Siwicki recommends five standing exercises that may reduce belly overhang more efficiently than typical gym workouts for those over 60.

"No exercise can burn fat at just one spot; that's more about nutrition and overall activity level," Siwicki explains. "However, these exercises help tighten the muscle underneath your fat, improve posture, and naturally draw everything in, making people genuinely feel more toned in the middle," he shares. "Standing exercises outperform those using machines or floor work because when using a machine, you’re usually sitting or restrained, which lets your deep core rest. Floor exercises often teach your abs to bend, contrary to the core's true function, and can strain older backs. When standing, your core must perform its main role: stabilizing the spine while you move. This stability is vital for everyday activities like walking, reaching, and maintaining balance when you stumble. These are the activities that truly count as we age."

For those aged 60 and above, Siwicki offers five standing exercises that he frequently recommends to his clients.
