Top Home Exercises Recommended by Physical Therapists for Improved Balance After 60

A strong and stable body is essential for moving safely and with confidence.

Physical therapists play a vital role in helping individuals regain their functional abilities. Whether aiding recovery from injury or managing chronic conditions, these professionals focus on crucial aspects of movement, with balance being a key area. Stability is of the utmost importance; it enables you to navigate your environment safely and prevents falls and injuries. Everyday activities—like walking outside to collect the mail, stepping over a puddle, or reaching for something on a high shelf—rely heavily on balance. Thanks to their expertise in functional movement, physical therapists often emphasize strengthening exercises, walking patterns, spatial awareness, and even inner-ear exercises to enhance balance.

We reached out to a physical therapist to learn about the four expert-recommended exercises for restoring balance after the age of 60.

"Balance exercises are specifically designed to retrain proprioceptors and refine the brain's processing of balance. This leads to quicker and more accurate reactions, ultimately improving balance and reducing fall risks. By practicing balance, you enhance sensory integration, allowing the primary balance systems—vision, vestibular, and proprioceptive—to function together effectively," explains W. Zach Smith, Founder and Doctor of Physical Therapy at HIDEF Physical Therapy.
