Achieving a flat stomach requires dedication and continuous effort. For many fitness enthusiasts, targeting the belly is a priority since it’s a notorious trouble spot for accumulating excess fat.
Research reveals that men who engaged in daily 20-minute weight training sessions developed less abdominal fat compared to those dedicating the same time to aerobic exercises. Fortunately, there are various strategies to combat this persistent fat area.
In our quest for expert advice, we consulted Jacob Siwicki, the visionary behind Siwicki Fitness. As a distinguished NCSF and AFAA-certified trainer and a former Equinox elite group fitness instructor, Jacob offers unparalleled expertise. A Dartmouth economics alum and former football athlete, he has graced FOX 5 DC as a fitness expert and was celebrated as the top personal trainer in D.C. in 2021. He shares five innovative standing exercises to help you effectively diminish belly fat more rapidly than resistance bands for those over 50. Explore these tips to kickstart your journey.
It’s essential to remember that targeted fat loss, or spot reduction, is not feasible when it comes to belly fat.
“These moves strengthen the muscles underneath, improve posture, and help the midsection look and feel more supported. Actually losing fat still comes down to nutrition, total activity, sleep, and sticking with it,” Siwicki explains, adding, “Resistance bands are useful, but they’re just a tool. Standing exercises with body weight or dumbbells force you to manage gravity, balance, posture, and coordination all at the same time. That carries over better to real life because real life is standing, reaching, carrying, bending, and changing direction.”
Dumbbell Halos
- Stand tall with your feet hip-width apart.
- Hold a dumbbell end-to-end at your right hip.
- Maintain a soft bend in the knees.
- Gradually bring the dumbbell up toward your opposite shoulder, then “halo” it around the back of your head.
- The dumbbell should end at your left hip.
Front Rack Marches
- Stand tall with your feet hip-width apart.
- Hold a dumbbell in each hand in a front rack position (resting at shoulder height).
- Slowly lift one knee to hip height, and lower.
- Repeat on the other side, keeping your marching-in-place smooth and controlled.
Cross-Body Deadlifts
- Stand tall with your feet hip-width apart.
- Hold a dumbbell in your right hand.
- Hinge at the hips while lowering the dumbbell toward your left side.
- Drive through your right foot to return to the start position.
- Repeat on the other side.
Lateral Lunges With Reach
- Stand tall with your feet outside hip-width.
- Shift your body weight to your right leg and step or lunge to the right.
- Press your hips back as you lower into a lateral lunge.
- Reach both arms toward the lunging side or the ground.
- Push through your right foot to return to the start position.
- Repeat on the other side.
