DENVER (KDVR) — Two planes collided midair as they were approaching the Fort Morgan Municipal Airport on Sunday afternoon, the National Transportation Safety Board reported in a statement to FOX31.

A Cessna 172 and an Extra Flugzeugbau EA300 were attempting to land at the airport around 12:10 p.m. before they crashed into each other, the Federal Aviation Administration reported. Each of the planes had two occupants.

The Morgan County Sheriff’s Office responded to the crash and said that the planes caught fire. The sheriff’s office said there were injuries in the crash, but the extent of the injuries was unknown.

The office provided an update stating that the Cessna occupants sustained minor injuries, while one person from the EA300 was taken to the hospital and the other was pronounced dead at the scene.

NTSB will lead the investigation and said that investigators are expected to arrive at the scene of the crash on Monday afternoon.

A preliminary report is expected in approximately one month, which will contain the probable cause of the crash, along with any other factors that may have contributed to the incident.

The administration asks that anyone who witnessed the crash, may have information or surveillance video, contact them at witness@ntsb.gov.
